No matter how expensive your frame or wheelset, all your power has to pass to the road through a strip of rubber just a few centimeters wide. Tires and tire pressure directly determine rolling resistance, grip, comfort, and flat rate — yet they’re the part most riders can’t be bothered to research.

Why Tubeless Has Become Mainstream

Tubeless tires eliminate the friction between the inner tube and the outer tire, giving lower rolling resistance. “How much pressure to run” isn’t a fixed number — it’s dynamically determined by four variables. Understanding the direction matters more than memorizing numbers:

  • Commuting/training, prioritizing puncture resistance and easy repair: clincher + puncture-resistant reinforced tire
  • Advanced performance and comfort: tubeless, with regular sealant checks (it dries out and loses effectiveness)
  • Coastal, salt-exposed routes: clean the tread and check for cuts after every ride

Many riders spend big money upgrading their wheelset, yet still ride on old tires pumped rock-hard. In fact, the cheapest, most noticeable upgrade is a good new tire set to the right pressure — the best value for money, and the thing fewest people actually do.
