Modern sports watches spit out a barrage of metrics: running power, ground contact time, vertical oscillation, stride length, left-right balance, running dynamics… Most people feel anxious looking at them but don’t know how to use them. The point isn’t how much data you have—it’s knowing which few are worth tracking and how to use them.

Worth Tracking Seriously: Cadence

Cadence is one of the few metrics that “you can change immediately upon seeing it, and it has proven value.” Low cadence is often accompanied by “overstriding and heel-braking landings,” which increases knee impact. During easy runs, try slightly increasing cadence while shortening stride to reduce injury risk (no need to rigidly stick to a fixed number—it varies by individual).

The Truth About Running Power

Running power reflects actual effort more accurately than pace on hilly terrain and trails, making it valuable for hill intervals. But each brand uses different algorithms, so values cannot be compared across brands—use it as a “relative metric of yourself against yourself.”

The key to not feeling anxious about data is that every metric corresponds to an actionable step; otherwise, it’s just noise:

Be Aware of Device Error

Wrist-based optical heart rate often drifts during high-intensity efforts and intervals; GPS can be off near tall buildings and in canyons. For workouts requiring high precision, a heart rate strap and dual-band GPS are more reliable.

The biggest trap of sports watches is making you think “the more you measure, the better you train.” In reality, elite runners usually track just a few key numbers and glance at the rest before moving on—learning to ignore noise is just as important as learning to read data.
