Heart Rate Zones vs Power Zones: Which Should You Watch for Road Cycling Training

There are two main schools of thought for measuring road cycling training intensity: the heart rate camp and the power camp. Heart rate monitors are affordable and widespread, but they lag by 30-90 seconds; power meters are instant and accurate, but prices start at around NT$15,000 (about US$470). So which should you choose? The answer is actually “both” — but you need to understand how the two differ to correctly interpret the data.

  • Heart rate “hasn’t come up” in the first 5 minutes of a ride, so intensity can’t be judged

  • In the summer heat on Wuling, heart rate at the same intensity runs 10-15 bpm higher than in winter
  • Coffee, poor sleep, and stress can all cause your baseline to drift

Pros and Cons of Power Training

Pros:

  • 0.1-second lag, reflects output instantaneously
  • Not affected by external factors
  • The only reliable indicator for short intervals (Z5/Z6/Z7)
  • The most precise way to “pace by the numbers” on race day

Cons:

  • Expensive equipment — dual-sided pedal-based power meters cost close to NT$60,000
  • Requires calibration (zero-offset before every ride)
  • Doesn’t reflect “how tired you are” — power can look normal while heart rate spikes 10 bpm higher, indicating fatigue

Why Advanced Riders Use Both

Looking at power alone won’t show you fatigue accumulation; looking at HR alone won’t show you your current output. The decoupling metric is the essence of using both together:

  • On a 2-hour Z2 long ride, compare the power-to-heart-rate ratio in the first 60 minutes versus the last 60 minutes
  • If decoupling is greater than 5%, it indicates an insufficient aerobic base
  • If it’s less than 3%, it indicates a mature aerobic engine

First, beginners should buy a heart rate monitor first — ride for 6 months to build up body awareness before deciding whether to upgrade to a power meter. Second, a chest strap heart rate monitor is recommended — optical wrist-based monitors have large errors during high-intensity intervals (±5 bpm vs ±1 bpm). Third, for power meters, prioritize crank-based or pedal-based units — wheel-based units lose accuracy when you swap wheelsets. Fourth, the iron rule for race day: on long climbs like Beiyi or Tataka, watch power to control your pacing; in criteriums, watch HR to detect fatigue; in sprints, go by RPE. Fifth, in summer on Wuling, lower your heart rate zones by 3-5 bpm, since the heat causes heart rate drift — power zones stay unchanged.

Conclusion

There’s no “best indicator,” only “the most complete information.” Heart rate tells you how tired your body is, power tells you how much work you’re doing, and RPE tells you how much longer you can hold on.
