Introduction
Tataka is located at the entrance of Yushan National Park, at an elevation of 2,610 meters, and is the highest point of the New Central Cross-Island Highway (Provincial Highway 21). Starting from Heshe in Xinyi Township, Nantou, the 30 km of continuous climbing, sea of clouds, and Taiwan’s endemic species have earned it a reputation as one of Taiwan’s most beautiful mountain highway routes.

Segment-by-Segment Climb Analysis
Segment 1: Shuili → Xinyi (15 km, gentle)
Heading south from Shuili along Provincial Highway 21, passing by the Chenyoulan River, the terrain is gentle with rolling hills. Along the way, you’ll find the Plum Dream Factory and the Xinyi Township Farmers’ Association Winery, making it a suitable resupply point.
Segment 2: Xinyi → Heshe (15 km, 400m elevation gain)
The gradient begins to increase as you enter the mountain area, with Dongpu Hot Spring serving as a popular midway stop. Heshe is the last major resupply point before Tataka — be sure to stop and refill water.
Segment 3: Heshe → Tataka (30 km, 1900m elevation gain)
This segment is the core of the Tataka challenge, with an average continuous climb of 6.3%. Along the way, you’ll pass scenic spots including the Sacred Tree, the Couple Trees, and Shangdongpu. Above 1,500m, temperatures drop sharply and the air becomes thinner, making the perceived difficulty significantly higher.
Scenic Spots and Ecology Along the Way
- Couple Trees: Dead red cypress trunks left by a fire during the Japanese colonial period; a landmark scenic spot.
- Tongfu Checkpoint: Cyclists must register before entering Yushan National Park.
- Dongpu Lodge: At an elevation of 2,580m, it can serve as an overnight base.
- Tataka Visitor Center: The finish-line check-in point, offering views of Yushan Main Peak and North Peak.
Along the way, there are opportunities to spot endemic species such as Formosan macaques, Mikado pheasants, and Formosan serows, making this one of the most ecologically diverse cycling routes in Taiwan.
High-Altitude Precautions
Above 2,000m, the air is thinner, and some riders may experience the following symptoms:
- Headache, nausea, decreased concentration
- Heart rate 10–15 bpm higher than at sea level
- Power output 10–15% lower than at sea level
It is recommended to stay overnight in Dongpu or Heshe the night before to acclimatize to the altitude, and to adjust your expected finish time accordingly.
Practical Tips
- Warm Gear: Temperatures at the summit can drop below 10°C (even in summer). Be sure to bring a windbreaker and full-finger gloves.
- Hydration and Food: Resupply points are sparse in the mountains; it’s recommended to carry 2 liters of water and 4 energy bars.
- Weather Monitoring: Fog and thunderstorms often develop in the afternoon; it’s recommended to reach the summit before noon.
- Return Options: Descend the same way, or continue down toward Alishan (connecting to Provincial Highway 18).
- Combining Routes: Can be linked with Wuling for a “Yushan + Hehuan” twin-peak challenge (3 days, 2 nights).
Conclusion
Tataka is the essence of Taiwan’s high-mountain cycling routes. When you ride along the ridgeline at 2,610 meters and gaze out at Yushan Main Peak in the distance, you’ll understand why countless riders have listed this route as a must-ride in their lifetime. Prepare your fitness, respect the mountains, and Tataka will reward every pedal stroke with its most magnificent scenery.
