Taroko Gorge Cycling Taboos and Precautions

騎行路線

Introduction

Taroko Gorge is listed as a world-class landscape. The 19 kilometers from the archway to Tianxiang is the most magnificent entrance to the Central Mountain Range. However, after the Hualien earthquake in April 2024, multiple sections have been subject to traffic controls and the risk of rockfalls has doubled. This article compiles the latest taboos and safety regulations for cycling in Taroko — a must-read before you set off.

Post-2024 Earthquake Traffic Control Status

After the Hualien earthquake on April 3, 2024, many scenic spots and trails in Taroko were closed. As of 2026, cyclists should note:

  • Yanzikou (Swallow Grotto), Jiuguodong (Tunnel of Nine Turns): Under traffic control; follow official announcements.
  • Changchun Shrine: Trail closed; helmets required when passing on the road.
  • Cimu Bridge: Damaged; subject to time-based traffic controls.
  • Beyond Tianxiang: The road toward Dayuling is intermittently closed.

It is recommended to check the latest announcements on the “Taroko National Park” official website one week before departure.

Five Major Taboos

Taboo 1: Entering without a helmet
The entire Taroko route is a “high rockfall risk zone.” The national park mandates that cyclists wear CE-certified helmets; violators will be turned back.

Taboo 2: Stopping to take photos inside tunnels
Taroko has more than 20 short tunnels, ranging from 50 meters to 800 meters in length. Stopping inside a tunnel is a serious violation and carries a high probability of causing an accident.

Taboo 3: Tailgating tour buses
Tour buses emit heavy exhaust, have large blind spots, and may brake suddenly. Keep a distance of at least 30 meters from large vehicles.

Taboo 4: Entering during rain
The risk of rockfalls multiplies during rainfall. When the Xincheng rainfall station records more than 50mm over 12 consecutive hours, the national park will close sections of the road.

Taboo 5: Ignoring earthquake aftershock alerts
Since the 2024 earthquake, aftershocks have occurred from time to time. Carrying a mobile phone with earthquake alerts enabled is a basic requirement.

Safety Equipment Checklist

  • Helmet (CE-certified, not half-shell)
  • Bright bike light (must be on inside tunnels)
  • Reflective accessories (vest, arm bands)
  • Emergency contact phone list
  • Plenty of water (only 1 refill point between the archway and Tianxiang)
  • Power bank

Short version (half day): Xincheng Station → Archway → Changchun Bridge and return (20 km total)

  • Suitable for first-timers; avoids high-risk sections.

Classic version (one day): Xincheng → Archway → Tianxiang → return (60 km total)

  • Includes lunch at Tianxiang Hot Spring; chosen by 90% of cyclists.

Advanced version (two days): Xincheng → Tianxiang → Dayuling → Wuling (connecting to the East-to-West Wuling route)

  • An international-level challenge; requires obtaining a mountain entry permit in advance.

Practical Tips

  • Departure time: Enter before 6:00 AM to avoid the peak tourist bus hours (08:00–16:00).
  • Return time: Leave the gorge area before 4:00 PM to avoid descending in the dark.
  • Insurance: Purchase accident and travel insurance; Taroko is high-risk terrain.
  • Equipment backup: Tire repair tools, spare inner tubes, and a basic first-aid kit.
  • Route combinations: Can be linked with Qixingtan and Qingshui Cliff for a full-day Hualien grand tour.

Conclusion

Taroko’s magnificence is irreplaceable, but the price is a higher level of risk awareness. After the earthquake, Taroko requires every cyclist to be more cautious and to respect nature. When you wear your helmet, heed the traffic controls, and keep your distance from tour buses, this gorge will welcome you in its most majestic form. Safety first, so you can continue to enjoy the most beautiful mountains in Taiwan.
