Linear vs. Nonlinear Periodization: Which Suits Taiwanese Amateur Cyclists?

Periodization is one of the cornerstones of modern sports training science. It was first systematically proposed by Soviet physiologist Matveyev in the 1960s and later popularized in the West by Tudor Bompa, becoming the standard framework for long-term training planning. For Taiwanese amateur cyclists who can only train 6–10 hours per week, choosing between linear and non-linear periodization will significantly impact training effectiveness and race performance.

The Core Logic of Linear Periodization

Linear Periodization (LP) emphasizes unidirectional progression: training load gradually shifts from high volume and low intensity to low volume and high intensity, ultimately peaking during the competition phase. The typical structure includes:

  • Base Phase: Large amounts of Z2 aerobic riding to build the aerobic foundation
  • Build Phase: Adding Z3–Z4 threshold workouts
  • Peak Phase: High-intensity short efforts + Taper

The advantage of the linear model is that it is logically clear and easy to execute, making it especially suitable for riders with only 1–2 target events per year.

The Flexibility of Non-Linear Periodization

Non-linear / Undulating Periodization, promoted by Poliquin, Rhea, and others, advocates alternating different intensity stimuli within the same week, for example:

Laursen and Buchheit’s HIIT research also shows that non-linear arrangements can prevent adaptation plateaus from a single stimulus.

Practical Recommendations

  • 1–2 A-priority races per year: choose linear, starting 16–24 weeks before the event
  • Races throughout the year (more than one per month): choose non-linear, alternating intensity within the week
  • Training hours < 8 hours/week: non-linear is more efficient, avoiding high volume without intensity
  • Regardless of the model, a Recovery Week should be scheduled every 4 weeks
