The SAID Principle: The First Principle of Training Adaptation

Introduction

There are many principles in athletic training, but if only one could be kept, it would undoubtedly be the SAID Principle (Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands). First proposed by Franklin Henry in 1958, this principle is the first-principles foundation of training design.

The Core Spirit of SAID

The body’s adaptation to training is highly specific:

  • What you train is what you adapt to
  • What you don’t train won’t improve automatically
  • The specific form of training (intensity, duration, posture, cadence) all influence the direction of adaptation

For example: 100K of training on a treadmill cannot be directly translated into 100K road performance, because the posture, muscle groups, and cadence are all different.

The Five Dimensions of SAID

Implications of SAID for Cycling Training

1. Want to Climb Strong → Train Climbing

Most cyclists in Taiwan train with a mix of “flat + climbing,” but if your target races are Wuling, Tataka, or Xiakaluo, you must increase the proportion of pure climbing training, because the pedaling cadence, muscle recruitment, and psychological stress of long climbs are all different.

2. Want to TT Strong → Train in TT Position

Time trialists must spend significant time training in the TT position; otherwise, early-season TT performance will be 5–10% worse than on a road bike.

3. Want to Sprint Strong → Train Sprinting

A high FTP does not mean a strong sprint—these two use different muscle fibers and energy systems. To win the line, you need a dedicated sprint workout plan.

4. Want Heat Resistance → Train Heat Adaptation

Four hours of indoor riding in an air-conditioned room ≠ four hours outdoors in summer; heat stress is a completely different physiological stimulus.

Research Background

Franklin Henry proposed the SAID concept in 1958, and it was widely validated during the 1960s–1980s; Coyle et al.'s research on cyclists showed that training form (steady-state vs interval) leads to differences in metabolic enzyme expression; Bompa lists SAID as a core element of periodization design in his Periodization book series.

Practical Recommendations

  • Design training by working backward from the demands of the target race
  • From 8 weeks before the race, training intensity should closely match race intensity (maximize specificity)
  • Don’t over-pursue being “well-rounded”; amateur time is limited
  • Simulate racing: a full-intensity simulation once a month is the most direct application of SAID
  • Be aware of the “over-specificity” risk: training exclusively in one form will cause you to lose your base

Conclusion

The SAID Principle tells us that training is not about doing more, but about doing what is more “right.” Every training session should prompt the question: “Is the adaptation this workout targets the one my goal race needs?” This simple question can eliminate 80% of ineffective training. The most common problem among Taiwanese cyclists is “training whatever you feel like,” lacking goal orientation—this is exactly where the SAID Principle needs to be reinforced the most.
