Cold Adaptation: From Ice Baths to Brown Fat

  • Unlike heat adaptation, direct evidence for cold adaptation improving athletic performance is weaker
  • Most research focuses on weight loss and metabolic health
  • Benefits are limited for athletes in non-winter disciplines
  • The Wim Hof Method claims multiple benefits, but scientific evidence remains limited

Roberts et al. opened a new discussion on the impact of ice baths on muscle adaptation; van Marken Lichtenbelt et al. laid the foundation for research on BAT and cold exposure; Buijze et al. provided positive evidence for the health benefits of cold showers; Bleakley and Davison provided a comprehensive review of cold therapy in sports.

Practical Recommendations

  • For routine recovery, cold therapy is not needed every time; use it intermittently
  • For multi-day events (such as round-island rides or Tour de Taiwan), daily post-race ice baths are helpful
  • Avoid ice baths on strength training days
  • For cold showers, start with 30 seconds and gradually extend to 2–3 minutes
  • Begin cold exposure 2 weeks before traveling abroad for winter races to aid adaptation
  • Those with cardiovascular disease should consult a physician before trying
  • Do not undergo cold exposure during dramatic blood pressure fluctuations
