Getting Lost in Trail Running and Navigation: Three Layers of Defense — Watch, Map, Intuition

單車訓練

Introduction

In 2019, a trail runner went missing for over 24 hours on Beichatian Mountain, and in 2022, there was also a lost hiker incident on Hehuan North Peak. Taiwan’s mountain terrain is complex, and the cost of getting lost while trail running is extremely high. This article teaches you how to build a complete three-layer navigation system.

1. Layer One: GPS Watch

Mainstream watch options:

Brand/Model Battery Life Map Function Price Range
Garmin Fenix 7 36 hours Full topographic maps High
Coros Vertix 2 60 hours Full topographic maps Medium-High
Suunto 9 Peak 25 hours OSM maps Medium
Garmin Forerunner 955 20 hours Basic routes Medium
Apple Watch Ultra 12 hours GPS tracks Medium-High

Essential watch features:

  • Preloaded GPX routes
  • Off-course alert
  • Back to start
  • Low battery alert

2. Layer Two: Paper Map + Compass

Watches can run out of battery, break, or malfunction. A paper map is the “last line of defense”:

  • Scale 1:25,000 or 1:50,000
  • Protected in a waterproof ziplock bag
  • Mark supply points and emergency mountain huts
  • Learn basic map reading (contour lines, bearings)
  • Keep the compass away from the watch’s magnetic field

3. Layer Three: Instinct and Environmental Reading

When technology fails, rely on experience:

  • Sun position: Rises in the east in the morning, sets in the west in the afternoon
  • Ridges and valleys: If lost, descend to a stream and follow the water downstream
  • Vegetation changes: Different elevations have different vegetation
  • Sound clues: Vehicle sounds, waterfall sounds
  • Animal paths: Wildlife tends to follow ridgelines

4. Pre-Departure Preparation

  • Save the GPX route on two devices simultaneously
  • Inform family of your route and schedule
  • Check the day’s weather forecast
  • Confirm watch and phone battery levels
  • Set 2 checkpoint reporting times

5. SOP When Lost

The STOP principle:

  • Stop: Avoid wandering further away
  • Think: Recall your last confirmed location
  • Observe: Survey surrounding terrain features
  • Plan: Choose a course of action

Key principles: Don’t panic, don’t move in the dark, don’t split up.

6. Emergency Contacts

Taiwan mountain emergency numbers:

  • 119: Fire department
  • 112: Dedicated number when phone has no signal
  • 165: Scam hotline (mis-dial)
  • Forestry Bureau mountain rescue: 04-22332777

7. Frequently Confusing Sections in Taiwan

  • Beichatian Mountain: Dense arrow bamboo thickets, many branching trails
  • Nenggao Andongjun: Rapid weather changes, heavy fog
  • Hehuan North Peak: Silver grass obscures the trail during rainy season
  • Qilai Main and North Peaks: Many ridgelines, poor visibility
  • Yushan North Peak: Unclear branch trails

It is recommended to carry the full three-layer navigation system on these routes.

Practical Tips

  • Do complete desktop research for every new route first
  • Train map-reading skills on Nenggao and Qilai
  • Don’t sacrifice safety to “rush the finish line”
  • Hold the watch higher when GPS signal is weak
  • Carry offline map apps (Maps.me, Locus Map)

Conclusion

Getting lost is not a technical problem—it’s a preparation problem. From Yangmingshan to Yushan, every departure should be made with “returning home safely” as the premise. Only by building a three-layer navigation defense can you truly earn the freedom of trail running.
