How to Choose a Hiking Backpack: 30L, 45L, or 65L? A Capacity-to-Route Guide

裝備介紹

Introduction

When you buy a backpack, the shop clerk usually asks “how many days are you going for?” — and that question gets at the underlying logic: overall gear volume. Taiwan’s Baiyue environment is distinctive, with frequent rain, a need for cold-weather layers, and often cookware to carry, so recommended capacities differ somewhat from those in Europe or North America. This article offers advice based on real-world experience.

Three Capacity Tiers

Capacity Suitable Days Suitable Scenario Weight Range
25–35 L 1 day Suburban hills, day hikes 0.6–1.0 kg
40–50 L 2–3 days Short Baiyue trips 1.2–1.8 kg
55–70 L 4–7 days Traverses, winter season 1.8–2.5 kg

Anything above 70L is usually only needed for commercial guided groups, or for photography and technical gear that require heavy loads.

Choosing a 30L Day Pack

For a day summit of Xueshan Main Peak, Yushan Main Peak, or the Hehuan Peaks cluster, 30L is plenty. Key features to look for:

  • A hydration bladder sleeve (2L)
  • A rain cover (included on most models)
  • A hip belt (for stabilizing the load, not just a lightweight strap)

Recommended: Osprey Talon 33, Deuter Speed Lite 30, Gregory Salvo 28.

45L: The Sweet Spot

70% of Taiwan’s Baiyue trips are 2–3 days, making 45L the most popular size. It can hold a full setup — sleeping bag, insulation layer, three days of food, headlamp, and stove.

Recommended: Osprey Exos 48, Gregory Zulu 45, Mont-bell Alpine Pack 50.

Between 45L and 50L, it’s better to size up than down — an underfilled pack can be compressed, but an overfilled one leaves you strapping gear to the outside.

The Art of the 65L Traverse Pack

Multi-day traverses like the South 3 Section or North 3 Section, which run 7 days or more, call for 65L. The key isn’t “how much it holds” but “how comfortably you can carry it.”

What makes a good pack:

  • A hip belt that can bear over 70% of the load
  • Shoulder straps that follow the curve of your body
  • An adjustable torso length (XS/S/M/L)

Recommended: Osprey Aether 65, Gregory Baltoro 65, Deuter Aircontact Lite 65.

Be Careful with Ultralight Packs

Ultralight (UL) packs have become popular in recent years — under 800g with 50L of capacity — but they typically lack an external frame and will collapse under loads over 12kg. Only consider one if your total gear weight is under 10kg; otherwise you’ll end up with sore shoulders and a sore lower back.

What to Do During a Fitting

  • Load it with 10–15kg of actual weight
  • Walk for at least 10 minutes
  • Simulate uphill and downhill movement (squatting, bending forward)
  • Confirm the hip belt sits on the top edge of your hip bones

Practical Recommendations

Recommended combination for Taiwan’s Baiyue:

  • 30L: day trips and short exploratory hikes
  • 50L: works for 99% of Baiyue routes
  • 65L: traverses, winter season, heavy photography gear

Budget allocation: don’t skimp here. A backpack is your companion for “a week pressed against your back” — a cheap one will make you hate hiking.

Conclusion

Bigger isn’t always better, and neither is lighter. First figure out how many days your most common trips over the next year will be, then decide on capacity. Buy the right one, and it’ll last you a decade.
