Sleeping Pad R-Value vs. Weight Trade-off: Air, Self-Inflating, and Foam Compared

裝備介紹

Introduction

The main cause of hypothermia on winter hikes is often not insufficient top insulation, but cold conduction from the ground. The R-value of a sleeping pad is the key metric that resists this conduction. This article teaches you how to understand and choose the right sleeping pad.

What is R-value

R-value is a thermal resistance coefficient; the higher the number, the stronger the insulation. ASTM F3340 is the international standard test method.

R-value Suitable Season Corresponding Temperature
1.0–2.0 Summer Above 10°C
2.0–3.5 Three-season 0–10°C
3.5–5.0 Winter -5–0°C
5.0+ Snow season Below -5°C

High-mountain summer temperatures on Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks can still reach 5°C, so an R-value of at least 3.0 is recommended.

Three Main Construction Types

Air Pad: Inflatable, lightweight (300–600g), packs small, but vulnerable to punctures. Representatives: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite, Sea to Summit Ether Light XT.

Self-inflating Pad: Contains open-cell foam, inflates automatically when the valve is opened. Medium weight (600–900g), comfortable and durable. Representatives: Therm-a-Rest ProLite, Mont-bell Comfort System Pad.

Closed-cell Foam (CCF) Pad: Solid foam, puncture-proof, extremely durable, foldable. Weighs 300–450g, but packs large. Representatives: Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite, Nemo Switchback.

Item Air Pad Self-inflating Closed-cell Foam
Weight Light Medium Light
Pack size Small Medium Large (strapped outside)
Comfort High Medium-high Low
Puncture resistance Low Medium High
R-value range 1.0–7.0 2.0–5.0 1.5–2.5
Price High Medium Low

How Air Pads Insulate

Plain air loses heat through convection. Air pads use internal reflective films (such as ThermaCapture) or multi-layer structures to suppress convection, achieving high insulation of R 5+. The NeoAir XLite weighs only 350g yet reaches R 4.2.

Inflation and Snow-season Layering

Inflating by mouth introduces moisture into the pad, which can cause mold growth inside over time. It is recommended to use an inflation sack or a mini electric pump.

For extreme cold, you can stack two pads: a closed-cell foam base (R 2.0) plus a high-R air pad on top (R 4.0), for a total R-value of about 6.0, capable of handling -15°C. The foam base also protects against punctures.

Practical Recommendations

Taiwan Hundred Peaks recommendations:

  • Summer short trips: Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sol (R 2.0, 410g, NT$2,500)
  • Three-season all-rounder: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite (R 4.2, 350g, NT$7,500)
  • Snow season: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm (R 7.3, 430g, NT$10,500)
  • Entry-level: Naturehike Ultralight TPU (R 3.0, 450g, NT$1,800)

Conclusion

The sleeping pad is the piece of gear most often overlooked yet most impactful on sleep quality. At high-mountain campsites like Nenggao Andongjun, Nanhu Mountain, and Snow Mountain, ground temperatures can be 5°C lower than air temperature. Investing in a good sleeping pad is investing in your energy for the next day.
