Introduction
The human body needs 2–4 liters of water per day, and heavy-loaded trekking can push that to 5–6 liters. Water sources at Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks campsites are unreliable (Jiaming Lake Refuge Cabin, Qilai Nanhua pools), so how to carry, how to filter, and how to conserve are essential water management strategies every hiker must learn.
Three Major Water-Carrying Systems
Hydration Bladder: Soft-material bag for water with a drinking tube, allowing you to drink without stopping while moving. Capacity 1.5–3L.
Hard Bottle: Hard plastic or glass bottles like Nalgene, Lifefactory, etc., allowing you to see the water level clearly and are durable.
Soft Bottle: HydraPak, Salomon, etc., falling between the two, collapsible, and the mainstream choice in trail running.
| Item | Hydration Bladder | Hard Bottle | Soft Bottle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 1.5–3L | 0.5–1L | 0.5–1L |
| Weight | 130–200g | 180g (1L) | 30g |
| Drinking on the move | Extremely convenient | Inconvenient | Inconvenient |
| Checking water level | Difficult | Easy | Moderate |
| Cleaning | Difficult | Easy | Moderate |
| Durability | Moderate | High | Moderate |
Water Source Filtration Options
Water sources in Taiwan’s mountains are mostly alpine streams. Although they look clean visually, they may still contain protozoa (such as Giardia), bacteria, and microplastics. It is recommended to filter before drinking.
Mechanical Filters: MSR Trail Shot, Sawyer Squeeze, filtering 0.1–0.2 microns, capable of removing bacteria and protozoa, weighing 60–150g.
Chemical Treatment: Iodine tablets, chlorine dioxide tablets—lightweight but require a 30-minute wait and leave a taste.
UV Light: SteriPEN, destroys DNA, but requires batteries and clear water.
Boiling: Rolling boil at 100°C for 1 minute is the most thorough, but consumes fuel.
Trip Water Management Strategy
Using the 3-day Xue Mountain Main Peak and East Peak as an example:
- Day 1: Trailhead→Qika, carry 1.5L
- Qika water source (needs filtering), refill to 3L
- Day 2: Qika→369→Main Peak and East Peak→Qika, carry 2L; no water source below the ice bucket on the main peak
- Day 3: Qika→Trailhead, carry 1L
Key water sources on Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks: Qilai Nanhua (Tianchi campsite), Nenggao Andongjun (Baishi Pond), Jiaming Lake (refuge cabin rainwater)—all recommended to be filtered.
Hydration Bladder Cleaning
Hydration bladders are prone to mold. Recommendations:
- After each use, empty leftover water and hang dry with the opening propped open
- Once a month, soak with cleaning tablets (such as CamelBak Cleaning Tablets) for 30 minutes
- If not used for a long time, store in the freezer
Winter and Snow Season Water Management
In snow season, hydration bladder tubes will freeze—this is a classic pain point. Solutions:
- Wrap the tube with an insulating sleeve
- Blow air back into the tube after drinking to push water back into the bladder
- Switch to a hard bottle stored upside down (mouth down, so ice forms at the bottom)
Practical Recommendations
Recommended combinations:
- On-the-move system: Platypus Big Zip 2L (130g, NT$1,500) + Sawyer Squeeze filter (85g, NT$1,800)
- Campsite system: Nalgene 1L hard bottle (180g, NT$500)
- Refill container: HydraPak 2L collapsible soft bottle (85g, NT$800)
- Snow season: Hydro Flask 32oz insulated bottle (450g, NT$1,800)
Conclusion
A water system is not a single piece of gear—it is a combined strategy. First assess the water sources along your route, then decide how much to carry and how to filter. On a 7-day Nenggao Andongjun Southern Third Section trip, going without a reliable filtration system is gambling with your life.
