Introduction
The most commonly misunderstood technique on the basketball court is the idea that “shooting comes from the wrist.” In reality, both the FIBA coaching manual and NBA player development departments emphasize that shooting is a kinetic chain running through the feet, ankles, knees, hips, torso, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers. If power leaks out at any link, the later links have to “compensate,” and your arc, rhythm, and accuracy all fall apart. This article uses FIBA Level 2 coaching materials as a foundation to break down the five phases of shooting and offer corrections for common mistakes.
I. Breaking Down the Five Phases

II. How Power Travels Up from the Feet
Try a simple experiment: stand still without dipping and shoot using only your arms — you won’t even reach the three-point line. That’s because roughly 60% of shooting power comes from the legs pushing off the ground, 30% comes from torso rotation and extension, and only 10% comes from the arm and wrist.
- Ground-contact push time: ideally around 0.15–0.25 seconds; anything longer suggests the kinetic chain is getting stuck
- Synchronized hip and knee extension: film yourself from the side — the knee and hip angles should open up at the same time
- Keep the torso upright: leaning forward means you’re “throwing” the ball rather than “shooting” it
III. Release Point and Arc
FIBA statistics show that the ideal apex height for a standard three-point arc is about 3.0–3.5 meters, with an entry angle of 45–52 degrees. When the arc is too flat (under 40 degrees), the rim’s effective opening shrinks from a 45 cm diameter to less than 30 cm; when the arc is too high (over 55 degrees), spin and landing spot become hard to control.
Common corrections:
- Release point too low → practice the “shoulder pocket” release, starting the ball in front of the shoulder on your shooting side
- Arc too flat → imagine the ball needs to clear an imaginary bar set 1.5 times higher than the rim
- Shot landing short/forward of the target → usually caused by leaning forward; go back and check your Dip phase
IV. The 1-2 Rhythm and the 1-Count Rhythm
There are two mainstream shooting rhythms:
- 1-2 rhythm: suited for catch-and-shoot situations off a stationary reception — the feet land one after the other, with the inside foot landing first (for a right-handed shooter, the right foot first), giving a stable base
- 1-count rhythm: suited for pull-up shots off the dribble — both feet land simultaneously, the tempo is fast, and the difficulty is higher
P-League point guard Jeremy Lin once said: “The thing I spend the most time practicing when working on my shot isn’t my touch — it’s my footwork.” That statement confirms the proper sequencing of the kinetic chain.
Practical Tips
- Before each shooting session, spend 5 minutes doing Dip-Rise movements without a ball to dial in your lower-body timing
- Film your shot from the side with your phone and check whether your elbow stays under the ball and your index finger is the last to leave it
- Set an “arc-success rate” target for every set of 50 shots — only count it if the apex clears 3 meters
- Practice your upper body in isolation: shoot from a seated position to force yourself to rely on your core and arm, and figure out your upper body’s share of the power
- In your final warm-up round before a game, shoot only mid-range shots to help lock in a stable arc and rhythm
