Introduction
Traditional centers only Roll (sink into the paint). But Dirk Nowitzki, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Nikola Jokić changed the rules: big men who can shoot threes can Pop (step out) after the screen, creating a completely different offensive spacing. This article breaks down the tactical principles, execution keys, and defensive counters to the Pick & Pop.
1. Pop vs Roll Differences
| Item | Roll | Pop |
|---|---|---|
| Movement direction | Toward the paint | Toward the perimeter |
| Catch position | Near the free-throw line | Beyond the three-point line |
| Primary threat | Dunk, alley-oop | Three-point jump shot |
| Suitable center type | Athletic | Shooting |
| Against Drop defense | Somewhat effective | Completely neutralizes |
2. Why Pop Neutralizes Drop Defense
The logic of Drop defense: the rim protector retreats to the paint, and the on-ball defender chases over the screen. If the Screener rolls, the rim protector guards the paint.
But if the Screener Pops to the three-point line:
- The rim protector must step out to contest (if not, it’s an open three)
- Rim protector steps out → paint is empty, easy drive for the handler
- Rim protector stays back → Screener gets an easy three
This creates a “pick-your-poison dilemma,” specifically targeting teams that use Drop defense.
3. Three Keys to Executing the Pick & Pop
- Screener’s Pop direction: Usually pops to the weak side or the top of the arc, avoiding the other defender
- Handler’s pass timing: The Screener is in the best shooting position the moment the screen is set; the pass must be delivered within 1 second
- What happens after the Pop: If the Screener doesn’t shoot, he can re-screen or pass to a cutter
4. Advanced: Double Screens (Stack / Spain Pick & Roll)
Spain Pick & Roll: In addition to the Pick & Pop, add a “back screen” to free up the Roller.
Sequence:
- Center A sets the first pick for the handler
- Center A rolls to the basket, ready to receive the pass
- Another player B sets a back screen behind A, sealing A’s defender
- A gets a wide-open path to the paint, or B pops to the three-point line himself
The NBA Spurs and Mavericks are the primary users of the Spain PnR.
5. HBL/UBA Application Examples
Some Taiwanese high school basketball teams have already implemented the Pick & Pop. Neng-Jen, Songshan High School, and the Affiliated High School of NCCU all feature “stretch centers” paired with Pop tactics. But the execution challenges are:
- The center needs a reliable three-point shot (30%+ shooting percentage)
- The handler needs patience to read the defense (can’t just drive immediately after the screen)
- The whole team must space the floor (the other three players can’t crowd the paint)
Practical Advice
- Centers should add 50 extra three-pointers per day (top of the arc, both wing spots)
- Handlers should develop the habit of “looking for the Pop first” after setting the screen
- Scrimmage drill: restrict the offense to only Pick & Pop, forcing yourself to read the defense
- Coaches should add Pick & Pop options when designing ATO plays
- Watch Mavericks games to study the different screen combinations of Dončić-Lively and Dončić-Powell
Conclusion
The Pick & Pop is the key to neutralizing Drop defense in modern basketball. When your center can shoot threes, the “crowded” paint becomes “open” perimeter space. This is why every team is searching for a “Stretch Big.”
