The NBA Five-Out Offense: The Revolution of Five Shooters on the Court

單車訓練

Introduction

From 2018–24, the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, and Boston Celtics heavily utilized the Five-Out offense: all five players on the floor positioned beyond the three-point line. This scheme relies on maximized spacing to give the ball handler a wide-open 1v1 lane to the basket. This article breaks down the design philosophy behind Five-Out.

1. Basic Five-Out Alignment

Standard positioning:

  • 1 at the top (top of the arc)
  • 2 on the wings (free-throw line extended)
  • 2 in the corners

All five spots are beyond the three-point line, leaving the paint completely empty.

2. The Core Logic of Five-Out

No one in the paint → when the ball handler drives:

  • No weak-side defender in the way
  • No low-post center protecting the rim
  • A clean driving path
  • Easier offensive rebounds after the shot

The logic: rather than having a center camp in the paint and clogging space, spread everyone out and let the handler go 1v1.

3. Two Key Requirements of Five-Out

  1. Every position must be able to shoot threes: including the center. Otherwise, defenders will sag off and ruin the spacing.
  2. The ball handler must be able to attack the rim: Five-Out is designed for slashing handlers; pure jump shooters are less effective.

4. Five-Out Scoring Options

Option Trigger Result
Iso drive Mismatch appears Drive or kick-out
Drive & kick Drive draws help defense Kick out for three
DHO (dribble hand-off) Two players exchange Receiver attacks the rim
Pick & Roll/Pop Screen is set Creates space
Cut from corner Corner player goes backdoor Cut and receive the pass

5. The Houston Rockets’ Extreme Five-Out

The 2017–19 Rockets (Harden, CP3, Capela) pushed Five-Out to its limit:

  • 99% of offense was Iso + Drive & Kick
  • 99% of shots were threes or at the rim (mid-range shots rejected)
  • Capela’s main roles were PnR Roll + offensive rebounding
  • One of the highest three-point attempt rates per game in NBA history

Result: dominant in the regular season, but neutralized in the playoffs by “Switch + walling off the Iso.”

6. Five-Out Weaknesses

  • Switch defense can neutralize it (mismatches can also be walled off)
  • When the opponent has a strong rim-protecting center, drives become difficult
  • A center who can’t shoot ruins the spacing
  • Rebounding disadvantage (no one boxing out in the paint)

7. Five-Out Evolution: Spread Pick & Roll

Five-Out + PnR = Spread PnR. The signature of Luka Dončić and Trae Young:

  • 4 players outside the three-point line
  • Handler runs a pick-and-roll with the center
  • Center pops for three or rolls for the lob
  • Opponent helps → Handler kicks out to the weak-side three

Practical Advice

  • Five-Out suits teams where “everyone can shoot threes”
  • Centers should add 30 three-pointers to their daily practice
  • Practice Iso + kick-out: 1v1 with 4 shooters waiting for the open look
  • Add PnR variations to avoid being predictable
  • Watch Warriors and Celtics games to learn Five-Out details

Conclusion

Five-Out is the ultimate spacing philosophy of modern basketball. When your center can shoot threes and your handler can attack the rim, the paint becomes your shooting range—an offensive freedom traditional basketball could never imagine.
