MTB Jumping Basics: A Complete Guide to Safe Takeoffs and Landings

騎行路線

Introduction

The first time you ride over a small jump, that brief feeling of flight is enough to get almost every MTB rider hooked. But if you learn jumping technique the wrong way, the least you’ll suffer is a hard landing that damages your bike and body; at worst, you’ll go over the bars. This article takes you from the most basic rollers to table tops, helping you safely step into the world of MTB jumping.

Basic Types of Jumps

Type Description Difficulty
Roller Undulating terrain that doesn’t require leaving the ground
Kicker/Lip Small take-off ramp that requires leaving the ground ★★
Table Top Flat-topped jump with a wide landing platform and high margin for error ★★★
Gap Jump A gap between two platforms that must be cleared ★★★★
Double High take-off ramp + high landing ramp, requires high speed ★★★★★

Learning order: Always start from Roller → Table Top; don’t skip stages.

Take-off Technique

Pre-load Compression

About 1–2 meters before reaching the lip, sink your body down and compress the suspension. This action:

  • Stores elastic energy
  • Makes your timing more precise for “exploding” at the top of the lip

Take-off Timing

When the front wheel reaches the top of the lip, extend your arms and push through your legs, but don’t jump forcefully—instead, “let the bike carry you into the air.” Over-exerting upward will separate your body from the bike, causing loss of control in the air.

The correct feeling: your body extends naturally, like standing up but not actually jumping.

Body Position in the Air

  • Keep the pedals level
  • Knees slightly bent (ready to absorb impact)
  • Body slightly leaned forward (don’t lean back)
  • Eyes on the landing point

Landing Technique

Landing is the part of jumping where problems most often occur.

Ideal Landing Angle

The ideal landing is rear wheel first (or front and rear wheels nearly simultaneously). If the front wheel touches down first, the massive impact force transfers to your arms, and in severe cases you’ll “spear” and flip over the bars.

How to control your landing angle:

  • Front wheel too high: body too upright at take-off, or speed too slow. Fix by increasing speed or leaning slightly forward
  • Front wheel too low: speed too fast, or body leaning back at take-off. Fix by slowing down or leaning forward more actively

Landing Impact Absorption

The moment the rear wheel touches the ground, bend your arms and legs simultaneously to absorb the impact, like a spring compressing. Don’t keep your body stiff—suspension efficiency drops and you’re more likely to get injured.

Table Top Practice Strategy

The Table Top is the best tool for learning to jump because “not flying far enough” won’t drop you into a gap—you can land safely on the platform.

Learning steps:

  1. First pass at a low speed just enough to get onto the table top
  2. After feeling the take-off and landing rhythm, gradually increase speed
  3. When you can consistently land in the middle of the table top, try clearing the full jump
  4. After clearing it, keep practicing until the landing is completely smooth

Safety Rules

  • Don’t challenge unknown jumps: the first time you encounter a jump, walk down and inspect the take-off ramp shape, landing slope, and any obstacles
  • Confirm your speed: try at low speed first, then increase only after confirming the take-off and landing feel
  • Protective gear is a must: full protective gear for jump practice (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads) is the basic requirement
  • Practicing alone is risky: it’s best to ride with a companion so someone can call for help if needed

Practical Advice

  • Among MTB venues in Taiwan, Fushan Village bike trail, Xiaogetou, and other spots have jumps suitable for beginners
  • Start with wooden table tops—they’re more stable and more regular in shape than dirt mounds
  • If your arms go numb from vibration on landing, it means you need more knee absorption; your arms aren’t the primary impact absorbers

Conclusion

Learning jumping technique requires patience and a step-by-step approach. Every moment of flight deserves to be taken seriously, because it’s both a display of skill and a reflection of safety awareness. Start with table tops, build each element solidly, and your confidence in the air will accumulate naturally.
