MTB Taiwan Trail Exploration: Raw Mountain Path Experiences in Lala Mountain and Smangus

騎行路線

Introduction

If Xiaogetou is Taiwan’s MTB practice ground, then Lalashan and Smangus are the proving grounds. These two routes delve deep into the mountainous terrain of Jianshi, Taoyuan—rugged, with scarce resupply points, yet offering scenery so magnificent it makes you forget all fatigue. Each year, only a handful of MTB explorers complete these routes, bringing back indescribable trail experiences.

Lalashan: Trail Exploration in the Realm of Ancient Trees

Geographic Background

Lalashan (Daguan Mountain) is located in Fuxing District, Taoyuan City, and is renowned for Taiwan’s largest grove of ancient red cypress trees. The area spans elevations of 1,000–2,000m, with distinct seasons and vegetation ranging from broadleaf forests at lower elevations to coniferous forests at higher altitudes, creating a rich and diverse riding environment.

Main Route Features

Section Length Characteristics Difficulty
Xabaling → Luoma Road Section Approx. 20km Mixed asphalt + dirt trails, continuous steep descents Medium-High
Valley Entry Section Approx. 8km Stream bed crossings, boulder obstacles High
Forest Roads Around the Ancient Tree Grove Approx. 5–10km Moss-covered, dense root systems Medium-High

Key Riding Points

  • High-Drop Descending: The descent from the summit to the valley floor features significant elevation loss, requiring complete steep-terrain skills
  • Stream Bed Crossings: Some sections require crossing streams (depth varies by season); it’s recommended to head out one week after the rainy season
  • Cold Weather Preparedness: Temperature differences are large at high elevations; bring a windproof jacket

Resupply and Transportation

  • Base: Resupply points are available at Xabaling or Zhongbaling (convenience stores, rest stops)
  • Vehicle Shuttle: It’s recommended to drive to Xabaling, leave the car there, and after descending, carpool back up or arrange a pickup
  • Emergency Contact: Inform friends of your itinerary; cell phone signal is extremely unreliable here

Smangus: The Secluded MTB Sanctuary

Geographic Background

Smangus is the most remote Atayal tribal village in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. It only received electricity in 1995, and a road wasn’t completed until 2003. The ancient tree grove here is so vast it’s been called “God’s Tribe,” sitting at an elevation of approximately 1,500m.

Difficulty of Access

The road into Smangus is a challenge in itself:

  • Route 22, starting from Yulao, stretches approximately 20km with multiple sections of landslide-repaired pavement
  • Entering by bike requires ample stamina, with a climb of approximately 1,000m
  • The surface is a mix of asphalt, gravel, and dirt trails

Main Trail Features

  • Ancient Trail Section: The tribal ancient trail preserves its original terrain, converted from Atayal hunting paths—riding it feels like traveling through a time tunnel
  • Ancient Tree Grove Loop: Some of the sacred tree trails allow bicycles; the visual impact of red cypress giants blocking out the sky is unparalleled
  • Ridge Viewpoint Section: Offers panoramic views of the Malikoan River basin; on clear days, Dabajian Mountain is visible in the distance

Itinerary Planning

A 2-day, 1-night trip is recommended:

  • Day 1: Arrive at the village, explore the forest roads around the ancient tree grove, and stay overnight at a tribal homestay
  • Day 2: Set out at dawn to tackle the ridge route, descend before afternoon

The Smangus tribe offers homestays (advance booking required), with rates including dinner and breakfast—a rare cultural experience in the mountains.

Gear Requirements

Both routes require:

  • Bike: An Enduro bike or a high-spec Trail bike with at least 130mm of suspension travel
  • Tools: A more complete tool kit than usual; rescue is difficult here
  • Food and Water: At least one day’s worth of supplies; a water filter is a bonus item
  • Navigation: Download offline maps; a GPS device is even better
  • Lighting: Headlamp and bike lights (in case the ride runs late into darkness)

Practical Tips

  • Neither route is suitable for solo riding; ride with at least three people for safety
  • Trail conditions may be unstable after typhoon season (July–September); check the latest conditions before heading out
  • Respect the culture and land of the indigenous tribes; do not cross restricted areas or litter
  • Inform family or friends of your detailed itinerary, including your estimated return time

Conclusion

Lalashan and Smangus offer Taiwan’s MTB riders the most precious gifts—the chance to connect directly with pristine nature and the sense of accomplishment that comes from overcoming challenges. These are not just ultimate tests of fitness and skill, but spiritual journeys deep into Taiwan’s mountain culture. Are you ready?
