But for runners looking to pick up the pace, understanding the differences between the two strike patterns can indeed help make more informed training choices.

  1. Only consider forefoot striking when pace exceeds 4:30/km: Forcing a forefoot strike at slow speeds only increases calf strain
  2. Transitioning foot strike patterns requires 8–12 weeks or more of gradual adaptation—do not rush it
  3. Do not try a new foot strike pattern during long runs (over 15 km): Changing your strike pattern while fatigued multiplies injury risk
