
Introduction
Although Taiwan’s overall climate is warm, during winter and early spring, mountain lakes (such as Sun Moon Lake, where water temperatures can drop to 16–18°C from January to March) and sea areas north of central Taiwan can easily see water temperatures fall below 18°C. For outdoor swimming enthusiasts, cold water training is a challenging yet alluring domain. However, without understanding the dangers cold water poses to the human body, swimmers every year find themselves in danger due to cold-water-related incidents, sometimes life-threatening.
Physiological Threats of Cold Water
Cold Water Shock:
The first 30–90 seconds after entering the water are the most dangerous period. Sudden skin contact with cold water triggers a reflexive deep breath (gasp response). If the head is underwater at this moment, large amounts of water may be inhaled, causing drowning. Meanwhile, heart rate can spike to 150+ bpm within seconds, posing a serious risk for those with heart conditions.
Cold Incapacitation:
In water below 15°C, muscle function in the arms and legs deteriorates rapidly. Typically, after 10–15 minutes, you will noticeably feel your fingers unable to move properly. Swimming ability in cold water declines earlier than the actual drop in core body temperature, meaning “I feel fine” does not equal “I can still swim safely.”

In 15°C water, an unprotected person reaches mild hypothermia in approximately 30–45 minutes.
Five Levels of Safety Management
Level 1: Pre-Entry Assessment
- Check and confirm the day’s water temperature (measured, not estimated).
- In waters below 15°C, abandon swimming if you do not have a wetsuit of sufficient thickness.
- Confirm your own and your companions’ health status. Individuals with heart disease or hypertension face extremely high risk in cold water.
- Confirm that a shore observer or rescue personnel are present.
Level 2: Equipment Protection
- Water temperature 16–18°C: At least a 3/2mm wetsuit, plus a silicone cap (double-layered is better).
- Water temperature 13–16°C: 4/3mm or thicker wetsuit, plus a neoprene hood and neoprene gloves.
- Water temperature 10–13°C: 5mm or thicker wetsuit + hood + gloves + neoprene boots. Only those with extensive cold water swimming experience should attempt this.
Level 3: Gradual Cold Adaptation
Cold acclimatization can significantly reduce the cold water shock response. Performing cold exposure several times per week (starting with 30-second cold showers) for 4–6 weeks can reduce the gasp response and heart rate spike during cold water shock.
Level 4: Entry Procedure Management
- Enter slowly: Do not jump into cold water. Wade in gradually starting from the ankles, allowing the body to adapt step by step. This takes 1–3 minutes.
- Control your breathing: If you feel the urge to gasp after entering, remain still in the water, focus on slow breathing, and wait for the urge to subside (usually no more than 60 seconds) before starting to swim.
- First segment at an easy pace: Swim the first 200–300 meters slowly, allowing the body to gradually adapt to the combined challenge of exercise intensity and water temperature.
Level 5: Post-Exit Warmth Management
The most dangerous moment of hypothermia often occurs after exiting the water: because cold blood from the skin surface begins returning to the core after exiting, causing core temperature to continue dropping (the “after-drop” phenomenon).
- Put on warm clothing immediately after exiting (do not wait until you “cool down first before changing”).
- Use hot water bottles or heat packs on the neck, armpits, and groin (near core blood vessels).
- Do not immediately take a hot shower or apply hot water bottles directly to the limbs—this causes peripheral cold blood to return rapidly, worsening core cooling.
- Hot drinks (hot soup, hot tea) help replenish heat from within.
Practical Advice
- Sun Moon Lake water temperatures are low from January to March. During this period, wearing a wetsuit is strongly recommended for training, and single swim sessions should be shortened.
- Before swimming in cold conditions, inform family or friends of your location and expected return time.
- Carry a waterproof bag with dry warm clothing and leave it on shore, ready for immediate use after exiting the water.
Conclusion
Cold water swimming is an activity with unique appeal. Swimming through the morning mist over Sun Moon Lake on winter days is a cherished memory for many triathletes. But this appeal is built upon rigorous safety management. Knowing the risks, preparing the right gear, and progressing gradually are what make every cold water swim a safe and enjoyable experience.
