Why Is Open-Water Pacing Particularly Difficult?

The lack of external reference points, interference from environmental variables (a current can make you overestimate your speed; a head current makes you overexert), starting adrenaline causing most people to swim 15–25% faster in the first 200 meters than in training, and the fact that in a triathlon the swim is only the first leg with the cost showing up later—these four factors make open-water pacing far more difficult than pool swimming.

  • Short-distance triathlon swim: 82–88% of maximum heart rate
  • Above 90% of maximum heart rate: means you are going too hard and need to actively slow down
