Bilateral breathing doesn’t have to be limited to every three strokes. Other viable breathing rhythms:

  • Five-stroke breathing: Even lower breathing frequency, suitable for swimmers with good feel for the water and ample endurance
  • Mixing three-stroke and two-stroke: Use three-stroke bilateral breathing on long straightaways, then switch to two-stroke one-sided breathing for the final sprint
  • Alternating sides each lap: No need to force bilateral breathing on every lap, but ensure each training session gives both sides sufficient practice volume

For those new to bilateral breathing, you can start with “breathe only to the left for one full lap, then only to the right for the next lap,” allowing the non-dominant side to first adapt to the breathing motion before practicing alternating breaths within the same lap.

Common Problems with Non-Dominant Side Breathing

Most people encounter the following difficulties when they begin practicing non-dominant side breathing:

Breathing not timely: The breathing motion on the non-dominant side is half a beat slower than the dominant side, making it easy to swallow water. Solution: Slow down the arm pull rhythm to give the non-dominant side more time to breathe.

Head lifted too high: Lack of confidence in the non-dominant side causes the head to lift too much during breathing. Solution: Practice non-dominant side breathing in slow motion, focusing on the sensation of “ear close to the water surface.”

Disrupted arm pull rhythm: When switching breathing sides, the arm pull rhythm may pause or speed up. Solution: First do kickboard breathing drills to correct the non-dominant side’s breathing motion in isolation.

Specific Recommendations for Cervical Spine Protection

  • Do neck stretches after every training session: Lateral flexion, forward/backward nodding, and rotation, 10 reps each, to maintain cervical spine flexibility
  • Avoid significant deterioration of breathing form when fatigued: Breathing form often breaks down when tired, increasing stress on the cervical spine; lower the intensity when appropriate
  • Avoid sleeping in a fixed side-lying position for long periods: The neck asymmetry caused by swimming can be partially compensated by adjusting your sleeping posture
  • Seek medical attention early if you experience neck discomfort: Don’t wait until the pain becomes severe

Practical Advice

  • Set a “left-side breathing week”: Deliberately use only the non-dominant side for breathing throughout the entire week of training to quickly improve the weak side’s ability
  • Count the number of breaths per lap: Observe whether the breathing motion on the dominant and non-dominant sides is equally stable; this is an objective way to assess the quality of bilateral breathing
