- Controllable Cardiorespiratory Load: Indoor cycling (e.g., spinning) allows precise intensity control, making it ideal for structured interval training.
- Quadriceps Strengthening: Cycling primarily trains the quadriceps, supplementing swimming’s kick training and being particularly beneficial for breaststroke swimmers.
Disadvantages
- Upper Body Untrained: Cycling barely involves the upper body and cannot supplement swimming’s shoulder and back training needs.
- Low Core Engagement: Compared to running, cycling involves less core muscle engagement, offering limited supplementation for swimming core training (riding out of the saddle can improve this).

- For indoor cycling, recommended training intensity is 60–70% of maximum heart rate, serving as aerobic supplementation rather than high-intensity training.
- Cross-training should not replace swimming technique practice; if time is limited, in-water technique work always takes priority.
