Tubeless System Complete Guide: Setup, Sealant, and Common Issues

What is a Tubeless System?

A Tubeless (no inner tube) system, as the name suggests, is a tire system that does not use an inner tube. The tire is sealed directly onto the rim, maintaining airtightness through sealant tape and sealant.

Advantages of Tubeless

1. Lower Rolling Resistance

Without friction between the inner tube and the tire, the rolling resistance of a Tubeless system is about 2-4 watts lower than a tube-type system (at normal riding speeds).

2. Better Grip

Tubeless tires can run at lower pressures without worrying about pinch flats:

Eliminating the weight of the inner tube (about 80-120g per wheel), even with the added weight of sealant (about 30-60ml), still results in an overall lighter setup. More importantly, this is a reduction in rotating weight, which has a greater impact on acceleration performance.

Installation Steps

Required Tools and Materials

  • Tubeless Ready rim and tire
  • Tubeless sealant tape
  • Tubeless valve
  • Sealant (60-90ml per wheel)
  • High-pressure pump or CO2 inflator
  • Soapy water (for installation assistance)
  • Scissors

Step One: Apply Sealant Tape

  1. Clean the inside of the rim to ensure no grease or dust
  2. Start wrapping the tape from the opposite side of the valve hole
  3. The tape width must completely cover the bottom of the rim
  4. Overlap by about 10-15 cm
  5. Press the tape firmly with your thumb to ensure a complete seal
  6. Puncture a small hole at the valve hole location with a sharp tool

Step Two: Install Valve

  1. Thread the Tubeless valve through the tape from the inside of the rim
  2. Tighten the fixing nut from the outside
  3. Ensure the rubber pad at the base of the valve is fully seated against the rim

Step Three: Mount Tire

  1. Mount one side of the tire onto the rim
  2. Add sealant (can be poured through the valve or directly into the tire)
  3. Mount the other side of the tire
  4. Ensure the tire bead is evenly seated on the rim edge

Step Four: Inflate and Seat Tire

This is the most critical and challenging step:

  1. Use a high-pressure pump to inflate quickly
  2. A “popping” sound indicates the bead is seating
  3. If a standard pump cannot seat the tire, use a CO2 inflator or dedicated inflator
  4. Inflate to the tire’s maximum recommended pressure to ensure the bead is fully seated
  5. Shake the wheel to distribute the sealant evenly
  6. Adjust to target pressure

  • Soapy water: Apply soapy water to the rim edge and tire bead to aid sealing and mounting
  • Remove valve core: Remove the valve core before inflating for greater airflow, making it easier to seat the tire
  • Temperature: Install in a warm environment; tires are softer and easier to work with

How Sealant Works

Sealant consists of tiny fiber particles, latex, antifreeze, and water. When a tire is punctured, air pressure pushes the sealant toward the hole, where the fiber particles accumulate and solidify to form a seal.

  • Use a strap to press the center of the tire toward the center of the rim to increase edge space

Issue Two: Chronic Air Loss

Cause: Incomplete seal at the rim or tire bead

Solutions:

  • Reapply sealant tape
  • Increase sealant volume
  • Verify compatibility between tire and rim
  • Check the seal at the valve base

Issue Three: Sealant Drying and Solidifying

Cause: Sealant not replaced for a long time

Solutions:

  • Remove the tire and clean out dried sealant residue
  • Add fresh sealant
  • Set a calendar reminder for regular replacement

Issue Four: Large Puncture Cannot Be Sealed

Cause: Hole exceeds sealant sealing capability (usually > 4mm)

Solutions:

  • Use a Tubeless plug (Bacon Strip) inserted from the outside into the puncture
  • If the plug cannot resolve it, install a spare inner tube as an emergency measure
  • Carrying a spare inner tube is essential for Tubeless users
