But on routes like Wuling, Fengguizui, or Beiyi, descending skills aren’t just about speed—they’re directly about safety. A significant proportion of road bike accidents on Taiwan’s mountain roads each year occur on descents—not because riders are going too fast, but because of problems with brake timing, cornering lines, and weight control.
Descending is a skill worth training seriously, and the learning cost is far lower than climbing: you don’t need a higher FTP, just the right knowledge and a few deliberate practice sessions.
Braking Principles: The Science of Front/Rear Ratio
Road bikes have two independent brakes, and the front/rear ratio directly affects braking efficiency and safety.
Physics: During emergency braking, the bike’s center of gravity shifts forward due to inertia, reducing rear-wheel traction while increasing front-wheel traction. This means:
- Front brake force accounts for approximately 70–75% of total braking power
- Rear brake force accounts for approximately 25–30%
Correct operation patterns:
- Everyday deceleration: squeeze front and rear gently together, ratio around 60:40
- Moderate braking: both together, ratio around 70:30
- Emergency braking: front brake dominant, but never completely abandon the rear brake (to avoid front-wheel lockup and flipping over)

Brake Timing Before Corners
On Taiwan’s mountain descents, the vast majority of accidents happen when riders enter a corner without completing their braking. The correct descending corner procedure:
- Identify the corner early: Start preparing 50–80m after spotting the corner warning sign
- Complete braking before the corner: Reduce speed to a safe range before entering the turn

Body Weight Control
Body position during descents directly affects stability and handling:
Sit back on the saddle: Shift your hips toward the rear of the saddle to reduce forward weight bias, preventing front-wheel overload during hard braking. On long descents (such as the west-side descent of Wuling), maintain a rearward position throughout.
Slightly bent knees: Avoid locking your legs straight; keep knee joints as shock absorbers to absorb road vibration.
Hand position: On descents, grip the drops (the curved section of the drop bar), bringing your fingers closer to the brake levers while also lowering your center of gravity and reducing wind resistance.
Eyes looking far ahead: Always look at least 50m ahead, giving your brain enough time to compute response strategies.
Fatigue Management on Post-Climb Descents
After climbing Wuling or Tataka, your leg muscles are highly fatigued, but descending demands equal concentration. Common mistakes on fatigued descents:
- Lapsed attention: After sustained climbing, the brain is also tired, and reaction time drops by 10–20%
- Forearm fatigue: Prolonged gripping causes forearm soreness, leading to inconsistent brake force
- Low blood sugar impairing judgment: If you descend immediately after summiting without refueling, hypoglycemia can degrade decision-making ability
Post-summit descent preparation routine:
- Rest 5–10 minutes at the top, refuel with energy and water
- Check brake pads and brake cables (heat fade)
- Put on a windbreaker or vest (high-altitude temperature differences—avoid cold muscles affecting handling)
- Mental shift: switch from “push hard” mode to “focused observation” mode
Practical Advice
- Train descending: deliberately ride slow a few times to feel brake points and cornering lines: Don’t go full speed every time; sometimes descending at half speed lets you feel the technical details better
- Disc brake riders: watch for heat fade: The west-side Wuling descent is about 20km; continuous disc brake use can cause heat fade. Stop every 5km to let the rotors cool down
- Be conservative on unfamiliar roads: On your first descent of a route, keep your speed at about 70% of what “feels like you could go faster,” and only increase speed after learning the route
