However, many grassroots swimming gifted programs in Taiwan still use “how fast they swim” as the sole criterion, overlooking the multiple indicators that better predict long-term potential.

Why “Swimming Fast Now” Doesn’t Equal “Having Potential”?

This is the most important conceptual breakthrough in talent identification science: early maturers typically swim faster at ages 8–12, but their long-term development potential is not necessarily higher.

Reasons for this phenomenon:

  • Early maturers have larger bodies and greater strength, but this is a developmental advantage, not an adaptation from training
  • Selecting purely on performance often picks “early-maturing” rather than “high-potential” athletes
  • Many late maturers, after puberty development at ages 14–16, rapidly surpass the early “prodigies”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially issued a statement warning of the dangers of using performance as the sole criterion for talent selection too early.

  • Stroke Index: Swimming speed (m/s) × stroke length (m/stroke). At the same speed, a longer stroke length indicates a higher feel for water
  • Rate of skill acquisition: How quickly a new technical point can be integrated into one’s stroke
  • Self-correction ability: Whether a child can sense and correct their own movement deviations without coach cues

Dimension Four: Aerobic Capacity Foundation

The foundation of long-term swimming achievement (middle and long distances) is a strong aerobic system:

  • Cardiorespiratory endurance test: 400-meter freestyle time trial; the degree of decline between the first and second half (a decline of no more than 5% from the first half is excellent)
  • Recovery rate: Heart rate recovery after high-intensity swimming, reflecting autonomic nervous system efficiency
  • Lactate threshold assessment: Only needed for advanced selection; typically only meaningful after age 13

Dimension Five: Psychological Qualities

  • Delayed gratification ability: Whether one can forgo short-term pleasure for long-term goals

Dimension Six: Trainability

This is often overlooked but is crucial:

  • The family’s capacity to support in terms of time, finances, and emotional support
  • Parents’ attitude toward swimming (supportive vs. coercive)
  • The primary caregiver’s level of cooperation (transportation, nutrition management)

Recommendations Under Taiwan’s Current System

Taiwan’s swimming gifted classes currently select primarily based on National High School Athletic Games results and county/city youth championship results. The limitations of this system are:

  1. It is unfair to late-maturing athletes
  2. It overlooks technical potential and psychological qualities
  3. Performance at a single point in time can be affected by that day’s condition

Suggested improvements:

  • Combine performance assessment with biological age correction
  • Add feel-for-water assessment tests (stroke length tests)
  • Use trial training periods to observe the rate of skill acquisition
  • Conduct interviews to understand motivation and family background

Practical Advice

  • Parents should not panic about “not being selected”: Not making it into a gifted class does not mean there is no potential. Late-maturing athletes who continue developing in regular classes often surpass their early-maturing gifted class peers within 2–3 years.
  • Coaches should build multi-indicator talent identification profiles: Record each athlete’s arm span, stroke length, and skill acquisition rate. Accumulating 6–12 months of data is more reliable than a one-time assessment.
  • Psychological qualities can be cultivated: Rather than only selecting children who are naturally mentally tough, systematically develop delayed gratification and resilience to setbacks through training.
