For many Taiwanese road cyclists, the biggest training bottleneck is not willpower, but time. Between work, family, and commuting, squeezing in 8–10 hours of riding per week is already quite difficult. Under such time constraints, maximizing the training benefit of every ride is a problem every serious cyclist must face.

Sweet Spot training was created precisely to solve this problem.

What is Sweet Spot?

Sweet Spot refers to the intensity zone where power falls between 88–93% FTP, roughly spanning the upper end of Zone 3 to the middle of Zone 4. This intensity has several key characteristics:

  • Higher than Tempo: Produces a stronger training stimulus than steady tempo riding (76–90% FTP)
  • Lower than threshold: Recovers faster than threshold training at 95–100% FTP, allowing for more frequent scheduling
  • Maximized physiological benefits: At this intensity, improvements in aerobic enzyme activity, mitochondrial density, and lactate clearance capacity are most efficient

Research shows that accumulating 3–6 hours of training in the Sweet Spot zone per week can improve FTP to a degree comparable to twice the training volume at lower intensities.

How Time-Constrained Cyclists Can Integrate Sweet Spot

For commuting cyclists with only 8–10 hours of training time per week, here is a practical weekly workout structure:

  • Monday: Rest or 30 min Z1 recovery ride
  • Tuesday: Sweet Spot workout (1 hour, including warm-up and cool-down)
  • Wednesday: 1–1.5 hours of easy Z2 riding
  • Thursday: Sweet Spot workout (1–1.5 hours)
  • Friday: Rest or easy ride
  • Saturday: Long ride (3–4 hours Z2, can include 1–2 SST intervals)
  • Sunday: Z1 recovery or 1 hour of easy riding

This arrangement provides approximately 2–3 hours of SST training per week, and a 5–10% FTP improvement is typically visible within about 8 weeks.

Practical Recommendations

  1. Don’t let Sweet Spot become “the whole ride”: Be sure to include a proper warm-up and cool-down before and after SST workouts to give your body time to enter and exit the high-load state.
  2. Keep pacing steady: The biggest challenge of SST is maintaining a stable output, avoiding “starting too hard and fading at the end.” It is recommended to track real-time output using 3-second average power display.
  3. Schedule an easy week every 3–4 weeks: Sustained high SST load without rest carries a high risk of overtraining. Reduce training volume to 40–50% of normal during easy weeks.
  4. The advantage of indoor trainers: Riding in urban Taiwan often involves traffic lights and elevation changes. Using a smart trainer with ERG mode for SST workouts keeps power output most stable.

Conclusion

Sweet Spot training is not some mysterious secret—its value lies in the balance of being “hard enough but not excessive”: it provides sufficient training stimulus to the body without requiring up to 48 hours of recovery. For time-constrained Taiwanese cyclists, this is currently the most efficient and sustainable method for improving FTP.
