Common Power Training Mistakes: Intensity Too High, Insufficient Recovery, and Inaccurate FTP Testing

A power meter is just a tool—what matters is whether you use it correctly. After talking with many Taiwanese cyclists who use power meters, I’ve noticed several training mistakes that come up repeatedly. These mistakes can sometimes seem counterintuitive—you train hard every day, so why won’t your FTP budge? You rested for two days, so why do you still feel flat on race day?

This article compiles the five most common power-training mistakes to help you diagnose whether you’ve fallen into these traps.

Mistake 1: Training “Too Hard” Every Session

This is the most widespread mistake. Many cyclists, after starting to use a power meter, have the initial reaction of “so I was riding too easy before,” and then begin maintaining that “feel-good” Z3–Z4 intensity on every ride.

The problem:

  • The body needs sufficient low-intensity training (Z1/Z2) to promote aerobic adaptations, not continuous moderate-intensity stimulus
  • Day-after-day moderate-intensity training causes the body to adapt and stop responding, trapping you in the “moderate-intensity trap”
  • ATL (acute fatigue) stays persistently high while CTL (chronic fitness) grows slowly

The fix: Ensure at least 50–60% of your weekly training time falls in Z1/Z2, and schedule a Z1 recovery day the day after any high-intensity workout.

Mistake 2: Insufficient Recovery After High-Intensity Workouts

After VO2max intervals or anaerobic workouts, many cyclists feel “fine” the next day and proceed to schedule another Z3–Z4 session.

The problem:

  • Adaptations from high-intensity training occur during recovery, not during the training itself
  • Muscle repair, mitochondrial biogenesis, and increased aerobic enzyme activity all require 48–72 hours of low-intensity recovery
  • Consecutive high-intensity sessions keep TSB deeply negative, leaving the body in a state of chronic fatigue

The fix: After high-intensity workouts, mandate 1–2 days of Z1 recovery riding (or complete rest). Don’t skip recovery just because you “feel fine.”

Mistake 3: Inaccurate FTP Settings

FTP is the baseline for calculating all training zones. If your FTP is too high or too low, the intensity of every workout will be off.

Common causes of inaccurate FTP:

  • Using a Ramp Test with weak anaerobic capacity, leading to underestimation

The fix: Retest FTP every 6–8 weeks, deliberately rest for 2 days before the test, and choose a familiar, stable testing environment.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the Importance of Z2 Training

This has been mentioned several times already, but it’s worth emphasizing again. Many cyclists feel that “Z2 is too slow, it doesn’t feel like training,” so they push all their training to Z3 and above.

The problem: Z2 is the most critical training intensity for mitochondrial biogenesis and fat oxidation optimization. If you skip building your Z2 base, the ceiling for high-intensity workouts will be limited—without a sufficient aerobic foundation, the benefits of VO2max training are also diminished.

Mistake 5: Tracking TSS Without Paying Attention to Distribution

Many cyclists using TrainingPeaks track their weekly total TSS but overlook that the source of TSS matters more than the total. Take two ways to reach 500 TSS in a week:

  • Option A: 7 days of 70 TSS each (all Z3, no high intensity and no true Z2)
  • Option B: 3 days of Z2 (60 TSS each) + 2 days of high-intensity workouts (110 TSS each) + 2 recovery days (25 TSS each)

Option B delivers far greater training adaptation benefits than Option A, even with the same total TSS.

Practical Recommendations

  1. Do a training distribution audit monthly: Calculate the percentage of cumulative time in each zone and confirm it matches the target intensity distribution of your current training plan.
  2. “I feel great today” is not a reason to increase intensity: If the plan says Z2, it’s Z2; if the plan says rest, it’s rest. Your body’s subjective feedback lags by 24–48 hours.
  3. Keep a training log: Record perceived exertion (RPE), sleep quality, and any discomfort symptoms after each session, and combine them with objective data for decision-making.
  4. Training mistakes are more dangerous than not training: Wrong high-intensity training isn’t just ineffective—it can lead to chronic fatigue, decreased immunity, and even overtraining syndrome.

Conclusion

Many power-training mistakes stem from the intuitive belief that “harder is better.” But the logic of scientific training is the opposite—correct intensity distribution, adequate recovery, and an accurate FTP baseline are what truly turn training into progress. Identifying and correcting these common mistakes will often improve your riding performance faster than simply adding more training volume.
