Indoor Trainer Power Training: Proper Use of ERG Mode and Common Pitfalls

Introduction

The popularity of smart trainers has allowed cyclists in Taiwan to schedule high-quality power training on rainy days, at night, or when air quality is poor. Combined with platforms such as Zwift and TrainerRoad, ERG (Ergometer) mode allows the trainer to automatically adjust resistance to maintain a preset power output, making it theoretically the most precise way to execute a power-based workout plan.

Solution: Anaerobic and neuromuscular workouts (short sprints, Tabata) should be performed in Resistance Mode or Slope Mode, allowing the rider to control output themselves.

Gear Shifting Issues

In ERG mode, shifting is theoretically unnecessary (the system automatically adjusts resistance), but in practice it is recommended to:

  • Use middle gears (big chainring + middle cassette cogs) to ensure optimal drivetrain efficiency
  • Avoid cross-chaining configurations (big chainring with the largest or smallest cog)
  • Rapid shifting in ERG mode can briefly confuse the power control system

  • Summer heat: An indoor trainer paired with a large fan can prevent high temperatures from affecting training quality (power output during outdoor riding in high heat can drop by 5–15%).
  • Equipment recommendations: Direct Drive trainer brands commonly used by Taiwanese cyclists include Wahoo KICKR, Tacx NEO, and Elite Direto, all with accuracy within ±2%.

  2. A cooling fan is essential: Indoor training lacks natural airflow, causing skin temperature to rise rapidly, which leads to higher heart rate and lower power output. A powerful fan brings training quality closer to outdoor levels.
  3. “Wake up ERG” 5 minutes before training: Allow the trainer to warm up; ERG resistance control is more stable after a brief warm-up.
  4. Calibrate the power meter and trainer regularly: Ensure the trainer’s power readings match the power meter to avoid systematic deviations in training intensity.
