Standing Climbing: Steep Slopes and Short Sprints

  • The upper body can swing side to side to assist power output
  • It is easier to respond to sudden terrain changes

However, standing climbing presents one major challenge: the rear wheel is prone to slipping due to forward weight shift. Solutions:

  • Push the hips slightly backward while standing to maintain pressure on the rear wheel
  • Pedal smoothly and powerfully, avoiding “stomping”

Shift down early before approaching a steep section—do not wait until you are nearly stopped to shift. Modern MTB 1x drivetrains (12-speed) offer a wide gear range; making good use of the lightest gear will help you maintain pedaling efficiency on steep climbs.

Practical Tips

  • Practice completing an entire climb seated only to train rear-wheel traction control
  • Find a slope steeper than 15% and repeatedly practice pushing the hips back while standing
  • Do not stare at the front wheel while climbing; look 3–5 meters ahead to anticipate terrain changes earlier
  • When encountering rocks or roots on a climb, keep pedaling through them—stopping pedaling is more likely to cause loss of rear-wheel traction
