Behind this is a complete cornering technique system: outside pedal pressure providing a stable fulcrum, the correct lean angle balancing centrifugal force against gravity, and vision guiding optimal line selection.
Outside Pedal: The Stable Foundation of Cornering
Outside pedal pressure is the most fundamental and important single technical point in MTB cornering:
- Before entering the corner, push the outside foot (the foot away from the corner’s center) down to the lowest point (6 o’clock position)
- After pushing the outside foot down, press your body weight onto the outside pedal
- This action lowers your center of gravity and increases ground pressure on the outside wheel
Why is outside pedal pressure so important? Physically, the weight on the outside foot provides an inward-leaning moment that helps the bike maintain balance against centrifugal force. At the same time, when the outside pedal is near the ground, it also acts as a guard against excessive lean.

Bike and Rider Leaning Together (Counter-Steering):
The bike and rider lean together. This method allows a greater lean angle on high-speed, smooth corners and suits faster situations.
The ideal lean angle in a corner depends on:
- Entry speed (the faster you go, the greater the lean angle needed)
- Corner radius (the tighter the corner, the greater the lean angle needed)
- Ground traction (dirt or loose gravel significantly reduces the maximum safe lean angle)
Vision and Line Planning
“Your bike goes where your eyes go”—this is the core principle of MTB cornering technique:
- Before the corner: Scan the entire corner, assessing radius, ground conditions, and the exit line
- Entering the corner: Shift your vision to the exit point immediately—don’t stare at the inside of the corner
- Exiting the corner: Look ahead to the next section and prepare for what’s next
Basic line selection principles (the racing line from road cycling needs modification for MTB):
- The “best line” in an MTB corner is usually the ground with the best traction, not the shortest path
- Avoid standing water, loose gravel, or wet roots on the inside of the corner
- In technical corners with obstacles, going around obstacles takes priority over chasing the shortest line
Cornering Speed Management
- Finish braking before the corner: Don’t brake in the corner (especially avoid the front brake while leaned over)
- Keep pedaling or coasting: If pedaling through the corner, keep the output smooth rather than stomping
- Accelerate out of the corner: Once the bike is upright, pedal and accelerate immediately, using the momentum from the corner exit
Practical Tips
- Find a parking lot, set up a large corner with cones, and repeatedly practice the feel of outside pedal pressure
- Gradually tighten the cone spacing to train tighter cornering ability
- Use a “slow in, fast out” cornering strategy—conservative entry, aggressive exit
- On mud or wet surfaces, significantly reduce your lean angle and carry speed instead of lean
