Introduction
Many MTB riders own high-end full-suspension bikes yet never touch their suspension settings, riding along with whatever the factory shipped. In reality, poorly tuned suspension not only fails to deliver its intended performance but can actively work against you — suspension that’s too stiff transmits excessive impact, while suspension that’s too soft wastes pedaling energy. Mastering the basics of suspension setup is a fundamental skill every MTB rider should have.
Three Key Suspension Adjustments
Modern MTB forks and rear shocks typically offer three main adjustment points:
1. Air Pressure / Spring Preload
Determines the “firmness” of the suspension — how much it compresses under a given load.
2. Rebound
Controls how fast the suspension returns to its normal position after being compressed.
3. Compression (found on higher-end shocks)
Controls how fast the suspension compresses, split into low-speed compression (pedaling efficiency) and high-speed compression (impact absorption).
Sag Setup — The Most Important Starting Point
Sag is the percentage of travel already compressed by the suspension when the rider is seated at rest. Correct sag is the foundation of any suspension setup:

- Have someone note the position of the rubber O-ring on the suspension shaft
- Dismount carefully, then measure the distance from the O-ring to the fully compressed end
- Calculate (compression amount ÷ total travel × 100%) to get your sag percentage
- Adjust air pressure until you reach your target sag
Every roughly 10 psi change in fork air pressure shifts sag by about 2–3% (varies by brand and model).
Rebound Speed Tuning
Rebound speed is the most overlooked setting, yet it has an outsized impact on handling:
Rebound Too Fast:
- The suspension springs back quickly after compression, tending to “kick” the rider
- Over consecutive bumps, the suspension can’t reset in time for the next impact
- The bike feels bouncy and “skittish,” hard to control
Rebound Too Slow:
- The suspension can’t fully extend between consecutive impacts
- Travel gradually “packs down,” losing its cushioning effect
- The bike feels like it’s riding lower and getting stiffer the longer you ride
How to Test for Correct Rebound Speed:
On flat ground, press the fork down and release it. Correct rebound speed should let the fork return to its normal position smoothly in one motion — it shouldn’t overshoot and bounce past normal height, nor should it creep back slowly.
Monitoring Travel Usage
After every ride, check your travel usage — the maximum compression shown by the O-ring position:
- Ideal usage: 75–95% of travel after riding technical terrain
- Under-using travel (< 70%): Air pressure too high or rebound too slow — reduce pressure by 5–10 psi
- Over-using travel (bottoming out): Air pressure too low — increase pressure by 5–10 psi, or consider adding bottom-out bumpers
Practical Tips
- Change only one parameter at a time and note how it feels before and after, to gradually zero in on your ideal setup
- Air pressure shifts with temperature (rises in heat, drops in cold) — recheck before riding across seasons
- Fork and rear shock air valves use special fittings and require a dedicated MTB shock pump
- Regular maintenance (cleaning seals every 50–100 hours) extends suspension life far more than any setting tweak

There is no single “perfect setting” for suspension tuning — the best setup is whatever makes you feel most comfortable and confident on the terrain you ride most.
