However, many riders simply “push through” climbs without clear intensity targets, ending each climb feeling tired but unsure whether they are actually improving.   • Beiyi Highway (Pinglin toward Yilan direction): approximately 30–40 minutes of continuous climbing
  • Wuling East Approach (Wushe toward Wuling): an ultra-long climb of over 2 hours, suitable for aerobic endurance training
  • Lixing Industrial Road: approximately 50 minutes of high-intensity climbing, suitable for threshold training

Climbing Repeats: Choose an uphill section of 8–15 minutes, ride it 3–5 times at near-threshold intensity, recovering on the descent between sets. This method has high training density and suits riders with limited time.

Cadence Variation Training: On the same climb, do the first rep at low cadence (60–65 RPM) with heavy pedaling to train strength, and the second rep at high cadence (80–85 RPM) with light pedaling to train cardiorespiratory efficiency, feeling the difference between the two approaches.

Timeline of Cardiorespiratory Adaptations to Climbing

  • Weeks 1–4: Neuromuscular adaptation, improved movement efficiency, feeling slightly less effortful
  • Weeks 4–8: Increased mitochondrial density, improved lactate clearance
  • Weeks 8–12: Improved cardiac output, noticeable progress in average climbing speed
  • Months 3–6: Overall climbing ability improves comprehensively, able to sustain higher power for longer periods

Common Climbing Training Mistakes

  • Starting too fast: Many riders go all-out at the start of a climb, causing cadence to collapse in the latter half, with heart rate spiking while power drops
  • Using only one cadence: A fixed cadence makes the training stimulus too monotonous; it should be varied regularly
  • Neglecting recovery: Adequate recovery is needed after climbing training; several consecutive days of hard climbs can lead to overtraining
  • Pacing by feel: The gradient changes on Taiwan’s mountain roads are large, making it difficult to control intensity by feel alone; a power meter is the most valuable tool for climbing training

Practical Advice

  • Use a power meter to set pacing targets, using watts rather than speed as the intensity indicator (speed is too heavily affected by gradient and wind)
  • Ensure adequate carbohydrate intake before climbing; during long climbs, replenish with energy gels or bananas every 45–60 minutes
  • Pay special attention to hydration when climbing in Taiwan’s summer; although temperatures are lower in higher-altitude mountain areas, sweat loss is still significant
  • In the 2–3 weeks before a race, switch your training climbs to gradients matching the target course for specific training
