Introduction

In Taiwan, both road cycling and road running are extremely popular forms of cardiorespiratory training. Some cyclists also run, and some runners also cycle, but many are unclear about the similarities and differences in the cardiorespiratory training effects of these two sports. “Can cycling replace running training?” “Is running more effective than cycling?” These questions don’t have simple yes-or-no answers, because the physiological stimuli of the two activities are fundamentally different.

Similarities in Cardiorespiratory Adaptations

Both sports are forms of aerobic endurance training and can bring about the following similar cardiorespiratory adaptations:

  • Increased cardiac stroke volume
  • Relatively stable maximum heart rate (usually slightly higher in running)
  • Increased capillary density
  • Enhanced aerobic enzyme activity
  • Improved VO2max (to a similar degree)

For cyclists, occasionally incorporating running training offers the following benefits:

  • Maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness: When injured or without access to a bike, running can sustain the aerobic base
  • Muscle balance: Running uses more glute and core muscles, which can compensate for muscle imbalances from pure cycling
  • Varied stimulus: Changing the movement pattern provides new stimuli for the mind and neuromuscular system

For runners, incorporating cycling training offers these benefits:

  • Reduced injury risk: Replacing some running volume with non-weight-bearing cycling protects the joints
  • Recovery training: An easy ride the day after a long run promotes recovery more effectively than complete rest
  • Increased total training volume: Raises total aerobic training volume without increasing the risk of running injuries

Which Sport is More “Efficient”?

This depends on your goals:

  • Goal is cycling competition: Prioritize cycling, with running as supplementary cross-training
  • Limited time and want to maximize calorie burn: Running wins
  • Have knee or plantar fascia issues: Cycling is the safer choice
  • Want long-term cardiorespiratory training with relatively low injury risk: Cycling is more sustainable
  • Want to maximize VO2max improvement: Running has a slight edge (but the difference lies in training precision, not the sport form itself)

Practical Recommendations

  • For cyclists whose primary training is on the bike, 1–2 easy runs per week (20–40 minutes) can effectively strengthen the core and glutes
  • In Taiwan, Daan Forest Park and the loop around Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall are safe urban running options; pairing these with weekend mountain rides makes for an ideal mixed training regimen
  • If training for both, schedule high-intensity sessions for your primary sport, and keep cross-training sessions predominantly low-intensity
