Compared to 1–2 hour training rides, Long Slow Distance (LSD) rides present a completely different physiological challenge. The fuel system, metabolic shifts, cardiorespiratory endurance, and mental resilience are all pushed to their limits during this time. This article analyzes the characteristics of long-distance riding from a physiological perspective, helping you prepare for and complete every long-distance challenge more scientifically.

Temporal Shifts in the Energy System

The body’s primary fuels are glycogen (carbohydrates) and fat. During long-distance rides, the ratio of these two fuels changes over time and with intensity:

Long-Distance Refueling Strategy

Refueling is the key to success or failure in long-distance riding:

Fluid Intake:

  • Target 500–800ml per hour (including electrolytes)
  • Total requirement for a 6-hour ride is approximately 3–5 liters
  • Take small, frequent sips to avoid stomach discomfort from drinking too much at once

Carbohydrate Intake:

  • Minimum 60g of carbs per hour (about 2 energy gels + 1 energy bar)
  • After training your gut, you can increase to 90–120g per hour
  • Taiwan’s convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) are densely distributed and can serve as refueling stops

Refueling Timing: Don’t wait until you’re hungry to eat. Refuel at fixed intervals every 45–60 minutes, even if you don’t feel hungry yet.

Recovery After Long Rides

A 4–6 hour long-distance ride causes significant muscle damage and glycogen depletion, and recovery takes time:

  • Within 30 minutes after the ride: Consume high-carbohydrate + protein foods (such as banana + soy milk, or convenience store rice balls + milk)
  • That evening: Eat a normal dinner and drink an additional 2–3 glasses of water
  • The next day: Do an easy recovery ride of 30–60 minutes in Zone 1, or rest completely
  • Full recovery: Typically requires 48–72 hours

Practical Tips

  • Bring enough supplies; on Taiwan’s mountain routes, convenience stores can be far apart (especially in the East Rift Valley)
  • Wear cycling clothing with pockets for easy storage of energy foods
  • Ensure adequate sleep (7–8 hours) the night before a long ride; sleep deprivation significantly impairs long-distance performance
