Limitations and Caveats of GAP

GAP is not a perfect metric, and runners need to understand its limitations:

  • Algorithm differences: Strava, Garmin, and COROS calculate GAP slightly differently, so values cannot be directly compared across platforms
  • Surface conditions not included: The extra expenditure on gravel or rocky trails is not included in the grade adjustment
  • Individual strength differences: Runners with stronger leg muscles have less braking expenditure on steep downhills, and GAP may overestimate actual expenditure
  • Fatigue accumulation from continuous climbing: GAP is calculated segment by segment and cannot reflect cumulative fatigue over long distances

  3. Do not force flat-ground pace on uphill sections; instead, maintain an equivalent GAP to avoid excessive expenditure
  4. Let your legs open up moderately on downhill sections, but note that braking expenditure increases after grades exceed -8%
  5. Use a watch that supports GAP or Strava’s advanced analysis features to track long-term trends
