Introduction
Wuling, at an elevation of 3,275 meters, is the highest point on Provincial Highway 14A and the highest point reachable by road in all of Taiwan. Every year, tens of thousands of cyclists come to take on the challenge, leaving with a photo next to the “Wuling” road sign as the most glorious memento of their ride. However, Wuling is not accessible by just one route—the east route, cutting in through Taroko Gorge, and the west route, climbing from Wushe in Taichung, represent two completely different cycling philosophies and physical tests.

West Route to Wuling: The Most Popular Entry Route
The west route starts from Puli, Nantou, climbing along Provincial Highway 14 to Wushe, then continuing up Provincial Highway 14A. Because of its relatively even gradient, abundant supply points, and closer proximity to Taipei/Taichung, this route has become the top choice for most cyclists attempting Wuling for the first time.
Key Sections
- Wushe → Cingjing Farm: Gentle gradient with expansive farm views; many cyclists stop here for lunch to replenish energy.
- Cingjing → Yuanfeng: Entering the true core of the climb, the forest gradually thins out, and arrow bamboo grassland terrain begins to appear.
- Yuanfeng → Kunyang: The most demanding section. Continuous climbing combined with mild altitude sickness symptoms above 2,500 meters makes the effort feel especially heavy.
- Kunyang → Wuling: The final three kilometers have a gentler gradient, but the “visual deception” effect is strong. By this point your energy is nearly drained, and every hundred meters requires a mental pep talk.
East Route to Wuling: The Most Magnificent Pilgrimage
The east route starts from the Taroko Arch in Hualien, following Provincial Highway 8 (Central Cross-Island Highway) deep into the gorge, passing through Tianxiang and Guanyuan before joining Provincial Highway 14A to take on Wuling. Both the distance and total climbing are more than double those of the west route, and it typically takes two days to complete. It is one of the most difficult road cycling challenges in Taiwan.
Key Sections
- Taroko → Tianxiang: Riding through the gorge with towering marble cliffs on both sides—the scenery is breathtaking. However, be aware of the many tunnels with poor lighting; be sure to have your front and rear lights on.
- Tianxiang → Xibao: Leaving the gorge and entering the mountainside, the views gradually open up.
- Xibao → Guanyuan: A long stretch of gentle climbing. The physical toll is steady but manageable; you can replenish food and water at the Guanyuan gas station.
- Guanyuan → Wuling: In the final approximately 30 km, the gradient increases noticeably. Combined with the low-oxygen environment above 3,000 meters, pedaling efficiency drops significantly. Allow ample time to reach the summit before sunset.
Common Precautions
- Altitude Sickness: Above 2,500 meters, headache and nausea may occur. If you feel unwell, descend immediately—do not force your way to the summit.
- Rapid Weather Changes: Afternoon thunderstorms are common at the Hehuanshan summit; it is recommended to complete the summit push in the morning.
- Warm Clothing Is Essential: Temperatures at the summit are 15 to 20 degrees Celsius lower than at lower elevations. Even in summer, pack a light long-sleeved jacket and gloves.
- Supply Strategy: On the west route, supply points appear roughly every 10 km; on the east route, some sections stretch over 30 km without supplies, so you need to carry enough food and water.
Practical Advice
Recommended for First-Timers
- Choose the west route, starting from Puli or Wushe, and consider staying overnight at Cingjing Farm before summiting the next day—this makes energy management much easier.
For Advanced Riders: East-to-West Traverse
- You can choose to go up the east route and down the west route, covering approximately 140 km over two days. It is one of the most epic cycling itineraries in Taiwan.
Season Selection
- Best: May, October, and November—stable weather and good visibility.
- Avoid: January–February (possible snow closures) and July–September (frequent typhoons and afternoon thunderstorms).
Conclusion
East or west—neither route is more “worth it”; only one is more “suited to you.” The west route gives you a complete and clear climbing experience; the east route gives you an epic journey through geological history. Whichever you choose, when you stand at the 3,275-meter summit with your bike, facing a sea of clouds closer than the sky itself, you will understand—Wuling has never been merely a finish line, but a profound conversation between you and yourself.
