Pacific Bikeway: Coastal Riding on the Edge of the City
Eastern Hualien City sits right against the Pacific, and the distance from downtown to the coast is no more than a five-minute drive. The bikeway planned along the coastline starts at Mambo Park on the north side of Hualien Port and extends south to the mouth of the Hualien River, covering about ten kilometers in total with smooth pavement and wide-open views.
Setting off between five and six in the morning is the best timing—the sunrise over the Pacific to the east, paired with the silhouette of the Central Mountain Range, is the one sight you absolutely cannot miss on a Hualien ride. Crowds are heavier on holidays, so weekdays or early mornings are recommended.
Liyu Lake: Lakeside Loop at the Edge of the Valley
About fifteen kilometers south of Hualien City, you’ll reach Liyu Lake—a natural lake nestled at the foot of the Coastal Mountain Range. The lakeside cycling path is about 5.5 kilometers in total, flat and smooth, with viewing platforms and picnic areas along the way. The lake’s surface mirrors the mountain shadows, serene and beautiful.
The rural paths through the Shoufeng River farmland near Liyu Lake are also worth exploring—rice paddies, bamboo groves at the mountain’s foot, and Hakka settlements compose a tranquil picture of valley country life.
The Hua-Tung Valley: Taiwan’s Most Magnificent Plains Riding
The Hua-Tung Valley is Taiwan’s longest rift valley, carved through by the Xiuguluan River system, flanked by mountain ranges on both sides, and stretching over 150 kilometers in depth. Provincial Highway 9 is the valley’s main artery, but traffic is heavy; riding the valley’s farm roads and township routes instead—passing through rice paddies, Bunun tribal villages, and Hakka settlements—is where the true essence of Hua-Tung Valley cycling lies.
North Section Highlights (Hualien → Guangfu)
- Shoufeng Township’s rice-wave farm roads: in October, the rice turns golden and ripe—one of Taiwan’s most captivating rural scenes.
- Fenglin Township is one of Taiwan’s most well-preserved Hakka culture towns; the Linfield (Lin Tian Shan) Forestry Culture Park is well worth a stop.
- Guangfu Sugar Factory is famous for its vintage sugar-mill building complex, with an ice cream shop and a creative market on site—an excellent mid-ride rest stop.
South Section Highlights (Ruisui → Yuli)
- Ruisui Hot Springs, Wuhe Tea Plantation, and Ruisui Ranch form the three major highlights of the southern valley; plan flexibly based on your riding time.
- The Xiuguluan River beneath Yuli Bridge is a renowned whitewater rafting spot and a signature landscape of the southern valley.
Practical Tips
Transportation Planning
- TRA trains allow bicycles to Hualien Station; both Chu-kuang and Tzu-chiang express services offer bike-carrying options (advance bike tickets required).
- Hualien Airport also has scheduled flights, suitable for arranging a 3–4 day long-distance cycling trip in Hualien.
Accommodation Suggestions
- Hualien City offers a wide range of lodging options and works well as a base for radiating out to various routes.
- Guesthouses along the valley often feature rural character; both Guangfu and Ruisui have cyclist-friendly accommodations.
Seasonal Suggestions
- Best: March–May (emerald-green rice paddies), October–November (golden rice waves, cool temperatures).
- Avoid: Typhoon season (July–September); coastal roads on the Pacific side are frequently closed during typhoons.
Conclusion
A cycling trip in Hualien gives riders more than just mileage—it offers a liberation of spatial awareness. Here, the mountains are truly immense, the sea is truly distant, and the rice paddies are truly vast. Bring your bicycle to Hualien, and let the valley winds and the Pacific sunrise become the most unforgettable cycling memory of your life.
