Mountain biking route in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu: Off-road exploration around Smangus

Introduction

Jianshi Township in Hsinchu is one of the best-preserved areas of pristine mountain forest in Taiwan and the most important traditional territory of the Atayal people. The Smangus tribe is located deep in the mountains at an elevation of 1,500 meters, and was once called the “tribe of God” because no road reached it. Today, although a road exists, that sense of remote isolation remains fully intact. For mountain bikers, the rugged mountain roads of Jianshi Township, the Atayal slate-stone house settlements, and the thousand-year-old sacred trees form Taiwan’s most challenging and exploratory off-road riding destination.

Neiwan Old Street: Supply Base Before Entering the Mountains

Neiwan Old Street is located in Hengshan Township, Hsinchu County, and is the most convenient gateway to the deep-mountain routes of Jianshi Township. The old street retains a strong Hakka mountain-town atmosphere, with wild ginger flower zongzi and Hakka ban tiao being must-try snacks. The Neiwan Suspension Bridge beside the old street spans the Shangping Creek; when riding across, the bridge sways slightly, adding a unique charm.

From Neiwan, Provincial Highway 122 toward Jianshi runs along the Shangping Creek valley, with the mountains on both sides gradually growing more imposing—the easiest warm-up section before heading deep into the mountains.

Yulao Observation Deck: A Secret Challenge for Road Cyclists in Taiwan

Starting from Zhudong and climbing continuously along County Road 60 to the Yulao Observation Deck, the full route is approximately 50 km with over 1,500 meters of elevation gain—the longest road-climbing route in the Hsinchu area. The gradient varies greatly, with some sections exceeding 12%. The Yulao Observation Deck sits at the highest point of the road, offering a panoramic view of the valleys across Jianshi Township. On clear days, the ridgeline of the Snow Mountain Range is visible in the distance, and the view is spectacular.

Yulao has a small restaurant and lodging, providing supplies and a resting point for mountain bikers, making it an important hub for entering and exiting the deep-mountain routes.

Smangus: An Off-Road Pilgrimage to the Sacred Tree Grove

From the Tianpu Parking Lot, a gravel forest road of about six kilometers leads to the Smangus tribe. This section of road has many potholes, so a hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike with wider off-road tires is recommended. Upon arriving at the tribe, visitors can tour the Atayal slate-stone houses, slate beds, and the terraced fields cultivated collectively by the tribe.

The sacred tree grove hike requires walking, but you can park your bike at the tribe and go light—the grandeur of those thousand-year-old giant trees and the tranquility of the forest floor are among the most precious experiences in Taiwan’s mountains.

Off-Road Riding Notes

  • Bike Selection: The Smangus forest road requires at least a hardtail MTB; occasional rockfall occurs at the forest road entrance, so keep an eye on the trail surface at all times.
  • Supply Preparation: Supply points are scarce in the deep mountains of Jianshi; it is recommended to carry at least 3 liters of water and over 2,000 kcal of food.
  • Communication: Some mountain areas have no mobile signal; it is recommended to inform family of your itinerary.
  • Entry Restrictions: Smangus implements visitor capacity control; reservations are required on holidays (by phone or online application), while weekdays usually require no reservation, though confirmation is still advised.

Practical Advice

Route Combination Suggestions

  • One-Day Easy Version: Neiwan Old Street→Jianshi Old Street→Xiuluan→Return the same way (approx. 60 km, approx. 800 m elevation gain)
  • Two-Day Deep-Mountain Version: Day 1 Zhudong→overnight at Yulao; Day 2 Yulao→Xiuluan→Smangus→Return

Best Seasons

  • April–June: Mild climate, abundant waterfall flow.
  • October–November: Autumn maple colors in the mountains, picturesque scenery.
  • Avoid: July–September typhoon season, when mountain forest roads are prone to damage.

Conclusion

Mountain biking in Jianshi Township is a deep dialogue with Taiwan’s mountain forest culture. Those rugged forest roads not only test a rider’s skill but also offer a chance for close contact with a thousand-year-old primeval forest. The sacred trees of Smangus have stood silently for a thousand years, having seen countless travelers pass by—and the day you ride there will become another tiny point of light in their memory.
