Round-the-Island Resupply Strategy: Convenience Stores, Bike Shops, and Accommodation Planning

Introduction

One of the most common mistakes round-the-island cyclists make isn’t a lack of fitness—it’s a poorly planned resupply strategy. You finish your last sip of water on the Suhua Highway with 25 km still to go and no resupply points ahead; darkness falls on the South Link Road in the mountains and you have nowhere to stay; the bike shop in Taitung closes at 3 PM, and you can’t fix a broken chain anywhere. These stories repeat themselves every year. This article builds your round-the-island resupply system from three dimensions: food resupply, mechanical resupply, and accommodation resupply.

Convenience Stores: The Lifeline of Round-the-Island Cyclists

Taiwan is one of the regions with the highest convenience store density in the world. 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, and OK Mart are scattered across cities and towns, but the mountainous east and certain stretches of road are clear exceptions.

Resupply Density Map (Overview)

Section Resupply Density Notes
Taipei→Yilan (Provincial Highway 2) High Dense towns and villages along the way
Suhua Highway Extremely Low Dong’ao→Heping: 40 km with no stores
East Rift Valley (Provincial Highway 9) Medium A settlement every 20–30 km
South Link Road Extremely Low Jinlun→Fenggang: 50 km with no stores
Pingtung→Kaohsiung (Provincial Highway 1) High Dense towns and cities
Tainan→Chiayi High The most convenient resupply section
Taichung→Hsinchu High Metropolitan area
Hsinchu→Taipei (Industrial zone section) Medium Few stores inside industrial zones

Convenience Store Resupply Strategy

  • Confirm the distance to the next resupply point at every stop, especially before entering the eastern sections
  • Balance hot food and carbs: Tea eggs, onigiri, and oden from convenience stores are an excellent energy combination
  • Take snacks to go: Before entering the Suhua section, buy 3–4 energy bars or peanut brittle as backup, not for immediate consumption
  • Estimate water intake: You consume roughly 500–750 ml per hour. In the east, the longest gap between two resupply points is 3 hours, so carry 2 liters
  • 7-Eleven’s microwave: When fatigued, grab a bento box—it delivers 700–800 kcal in 15–20 minutes with excellent efficiency

Bike Repair Shops: Locate Them in Advance

Bike Shop Distribution in Major Cities

Bike shops in Taiwan are concentrated mainly in county and city centers, with fewer in rural areas. Below are the key repair hubs along the round-the-island route:

  • Yilan City: 3–4 bike shops along Provincial Highway 9; some may close on Mondays
  • Hualien City: Several shops around Fuqian Road and Zhongshan Road—a good place to stock up on parts
  • Taitung City: A few near Zhongshan Road; not many, so it’s best to call ahead to confirm opening hours
  • Kaohsiung City: The widest selection, with shops near Love River and in Yancheng District
  • Tainan City: Near Minzu Road and Shengli Road
  • Taichung City: Dense clusters on Caotun Road, Wenxin Road, and Jingwu Road
  • Hsinchu City: A few in Zhubei; the city is small, so options are limited
  • Taipei City: Jianguo South Road, Gongguan, and Neihu offer the most choices

We recommend proactively getting a full bike inspection at the following locations (don’t wait until something breaks):

  1. Hualien City (the first major city after entering the east)
  2. Taitung City (confirm bike condition before the South Link Road)
  3. Taichung City (past the halfway point of the trip—full maintenance)
  4. Taipei City (final check; not necessary, but optional)

Accommodation Planning: Book Ahead or Play It by Ear?

Location Reason Recommended Lead Time
Hualien City Tourist hotspot, hard to book on weekends 7–14 days
Chishang Township Limited accommodation in a small town 7–10 days
Toucheng / Yilan City Weekend getaway hotspot for Taipei residents 5–7 days
Along the South Link Road Very few accommodation options, extremely limited choices 10+ days

Accommodation Type Options

  • Cyclist-friendly B&Bs: These are the top choice, offering secure bike parking, tool rooms, or air pumps. Search keywords: “單車環島住宿” or “自行車民宿”
  • Hostels: Hualien, Taitung, and Kaohsiung all have solid options—low cost and a chance to meet fellow cyclists
  • Temple rooms: Some temples offer free or low-cost lodging; ask in advance (search Facebook for “環島廟宇借住”)
  • Accommodation along the TRA line: Choose lodging near train stations so you can easily take the train if you can’t ride any further—more flexibility

Practical Tips

  • Log your daily resupply points: Before departure, mark convenience store locations on Google Maps or in your phone notes for each section, especially the east and South Link Road stretches
  • Save your accommodation address immediately after booking: Avoid searching for it when you arrive
  • Carry a Taiwan cyclist-friendly accommodation map: Available from the Tourism Bureau or Cycling Tour websites
  • Save screenshots of bike repair tutorial videos: Even if you can’t find a shop, being able to handle basic repairs yourself is crucial

Conclusion

Success on a round-the-island trip depends 30% on fitness, 30% on mindset, and another 30% on your resupply plan. Get your resupply strategy right, and you give yourself enough buffer to handle unexpected situations. Taiwan is small, but the details along the road are many—every convenience store is the starting point of the next stretch.
