Two Main Strategies

Even Pacing

Even pacing means maintaining a similar pace throughout the entire race, with a per-kilometer variance within ±5 seconds. This is the strategy adopted by the world’s top marathon runners, because even pacing uses glycogen and fat most efficiently, slowing the rate of muscle acidification.

Best suited for: Runners with extensive race experience who can accurately sense their pace

Advantages:

  • Highest metabolic efficiency
  • Relatively stable psychological pressure
  • Suitable for flat courses

Negative Split

A negative split means completing the second half (11–21 km) faster than the first half (0–10.5 km). This strategy is psychologically more conservative, ensuring you don’t start too hot, and allows you to accelerate in the latter half when you still have energy.

Best suited for: Runners prone to starting too fast from nerves, and intermediate runners attempting their first PB

How Taiwan’s Course Characteristics Affect Pacing

Most half marathons in Taiwan are not completely flat. Here are common terrain adjustment recommendations:

  • On climbs: Don’t stubbornly stick to a pace number; instead control by effort level (RPE). Your pace will naturally slow on uphills without increasing energy expenditure
  • On descents: Let go and accelerate moderately, but watch for quadriceps fatigue to avoid excessive impact on the knees
  • Wind: Slow down by 5–10 seconds/km when running into a headwind; you can moderately speed up with a tailwind

Practical Execution Advice

Pre-Race Planning

  1. Calculate your target finish time and divide by 21 to get your average pace
  2. Set a “warning pace”: do not run more than 5 seconds faster than this pace in the first 5 km
  3. Set a pace alert on your GPS watch

Psychological Anchors During the Race

  • Your 10 km split is the most important mid-race checkpoint
  • If your 10 km time differs from your target by more than 1 minute (too fast or too slow), adjust immediately
  • After 15 km, decide whether to accelerate based on remaining energy

Practical Tips

  • Practice your target pace in training: Complete the final 4–5 km of your weekly long run at your target pace so your body remembers the feeling
  • Avoid being pulled along by the crowd: In large races, the starting crowd can easily carry you out too fast—wear earphones or keep your eyes on your watch
  • Make a decision point every 5 km: Set three self-assessment points at 5, 10, and 15 km, and fine-tune your strategy based on how you feel
  • Aid station strategy: Practice grabbing water without stopping, or accept the 5–10 second cost of stopping for a full refill
