- On descents: Let go and accelerate moderately, but watch for quadriceps fatigue to avoid excessive impact on the knees
- Wind: Slow down by 5–10 seconds/km when running into a headwind; you can moderately speed up with a tailwind

- Calculate your target finish time and divide by 21 to get your average pace
- Set a “warning pace”: do not run more than 5 seconds faster than this pace in the first 5 km
- Set a pace alert on your GPS watch

- Your 10 km split is the most important mid-race checkpoint
- If your 10 km time differs from your target by more than 1 minute (too fast or too slow), adjust immediately
