Lower-Limb Weight-Bearing Training

  • Ride at moderate intensity for 45–60 minutes daily during the shoulder injury period
  • Combine with physical therapy exercises for the arm
  • In the first week after recovery, continue using cycling to maintain cardiorespiratory fitness before gradually returning to water training

Other Cross-Training Options

  • Rowing Machine: Highest simulation of the upper-body pulling motion, but also places high load on the shoulders, making it unsuitable during shoulder injuries
  • Core Yoga: Improves flexibility and core stability; suitable for 1–2 sessions per week
  • Aqua Jogging: Retains the low-impact advantage of the water environment while performing cardiorespiratory training

  1. Count cross-training toward total weekly training volume to avoid exceeding recovery capacity
  2. Warm up and stretch thoroughly before and after running: Swimmers have weaker running muscles, so injury risk is higher
  3. Schedule cross-training on “low-intensity days” of the training week to avoid interfering with water training quality
  4. Inform the coach of any self-directed cross-training: Coaches need the full picture to optimize the weekly plan
  5. Younger athletes can complete cross-training through physical education classes or school sports teams, making it more sustainable by integrating it into daily life
