This burning sensation is often blamed on “lactic acid buildup,” but modern exercise physiology has significantly revised our understanding of lactate. Knowing the truth is the key to finding the right way to break through your endurance limits.
Understanding Lactate Correctly
For a long time, lactic acid was seen as the culprit behind exercise fatigue, but research over the past two decades has completely overturned this notion: lactate is fuel, not waste. The lactate produced by muscles during high-intensity exercise can be directly oxidized and used for energy by the heart, slow-twitch muscle fibers, and the liver. What truly causes muscle acidification is the accumulation of hydrogen ions (H⁺), not lactate itself.
Lactate Threshold (LT) is more accurately described as two turning points:

Sweet Spot Training is performed in the 88–93% FTP range, sitting between Zone 3 and Zone 4. It is one of the “highest efficiency” threshold training zones.
Scientific Mechanism: This intensity stimulates increased activity of the muscle’s lactate-clearing enzyme (LDH) while promoting mitochondrial adaptations, yet without accumulating excessive fatigue. Performing intervals at 95–105% FTP directly stimulates physiological adaptations near LT2.

- 2 × 20 minutes @ 100–103% FTP (5 minutes recovery)
Method 3: Lactate Clearance Supersets (Over-Unders)
Over-Unders are among the most race-simulating threshold workouts, alternating between riding below and above FTP:
- Under phase: 2 minutes @ 88–92% FTP
- Over phase: 1 minute @ 105–110% FTP
- Alternate continuously 6–8 times per set
This workout simulates the race scenario of repeated accelerations followed by maintaining pace, making it especially suitable for riding on Taiwan’s rolling terrain.
Method 4: Polarized Training
Endurance sports research from Northern Europe and Norway has found that elite endurance athletes tend to adopt a “polarized distribution”—about 80% of training in Zones 1–2 (low intensity), about 20% in Zones 4–5 (high intensity), with very little time spent in moderate intensity (Zone 3). The takeaway for amateur cyclists: don’t ride at that “feels okay” moderate intensity every time—either go truly easy or truly hard.
Key Principles of Training Design
- Progressive Overload: Increase weekly training volume by no more than 10% to avoid overtraining
- Adequate Recovery: Schedule at least 24–48 hours of low-intensity work or rest after each high-intensity session
- Long-term Patience: Significant improvements in lactate threshold typically require 8–16 weeks of disciplined training
Practical Recommendations
- Use the Wuling eastbound section (45–50 minutes of steady climbing) as a natural Sweet Spot training venue
- Use the long stretch of Provincial Highway 106 from Taipei to Pinglin (consistent gradient) for threshold intervals
- Retest your FTP every 8 weeks to track progress
- If you don’t have a power meter, use the “talk test” as a rough estimate: near LT1 you can speak short sentences; near LT2 you can only utter single words
- Record “Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)” in your training log and analyze it alongside power data
