Weekly Undulating Example:
- Monday: Zone 4 intervals (high intensity, low volume)
- Tuesday: Zone 2 long ride (low intensity, high volume)
- Wednesday: Zone 5 VO2max (very high intensity, low volume)
- Thursday: Active recovery
- Friday: Sweet spot training (moderate intensity, moderate volume)
Advantages: Simultaneously stimulates multiple energy systems; less prone to adaptation plateaus; suitable for mid-season when races are imminent.
Disadvantages: The body receives multiple stimuli simultaneously, and each adaptation may not be deep enough; high demands on recovery capacity.
3. Block Periodization
Core Concept: Concentrate training goals into 3–4 week “blocks,” focusing on one or two energy systems at a time to maximize adaptation of that system before moving to the next block.
Typical Block Structure:
- Accumulation Block (3–4 weeks): High volume Zone 2 + moderate volume sweet spot, building the aerobic base
- Transmutation Block (3–4 weeks): Primarily Zone 4–5 intervals, improving FTP and VO2max
- Realization Block (1–2 weeks): High intensity, low volume, pre-race sharpening
Advantages: Concentrated stimuli lead to deeper adaptation of a single energy system; particularly suitable for advanced cyclists with more than 3 years of training age.
Disadvantages: High-intensity capacity may temporarily decline during the accumulation block; requires a higher level of training discipline.
How to Choose the Right Periodization Model for Yourself
- Training age 0–2 years (Beginner): Linear periodization is most suitable—clear structure, easy to follow
- Training age 2–4 years (Intermediate): Undulating periodization or modified linear periodization, maintaining multiple capacities simultaneously
- Training age 4+ years (Advanced): Block periodization yields the best results, helping break through plateaus
Practical Recommendations
- Taiwanese cyclists often have fixed race goals such as the Wuling KOM (May) and the Taiwan KOM Challenge (October); it is recommended to work backward from the primary target event to design a reverse periodization plan
- Schedule a deload week every 3–4 weeks, reducing training volume by 40–50% to allow supercompensation to occur
- Track weekly training load (TSS, Training Stress Score) and fatigue levels; you can use Intervals.icu (free) for monitoring
