“Why have I been training for six months, yet my progress is getting slower and slower?” This is a common confusion shared by many serious cyclists in Taiwan. The problem often lies not in a lack of effort, but in the absence of systematic training planning—that is, the lack of the “periodization” concept. Periodization training is the core of modern competitive sports training science, originating from the systematic research of Soviet scientist Tudor Bompa in the 1960s, and it remains the theoretical cornerstone of cycling training to this day.

Basic Concepts of Periodization

The core idea of periodization is: Training stimuli must vary systematically over time to continuously elicit physiological adaptations while avoiding overtraining.

The typical periodization structure, from largest to smallest, is divided into:

  • Macrocycle: Annual or seasonal plan (typically 24–52 weeks)
  • Mesocycle: 3–6 week training blocks with specific training goals
  • Microcycle: Weekly training schedule, including training days and recovery days

Three Mainstream Periodization Models

1. Linear Periodization

Core Concept: Linearly increase training intensity over time while systematically decreasing training volume.

Core Concept: Alternate training intensity and volume within a shorter time frame (weekly or even daily), keeping the body continuously exposed to diverse training stimuli.

Weekly Undulating Example:

  • Monday: Zone 4 intervals (high intensity, low volume)
  • Tuesday: Zone 2 long ride (low intensity, high volume)
  • Wednesday: Zone 5 VO2max (very high intensity, low volume)
  • Thursday: Active recovery
  • Friday: Sweet spot training (moderate intensity, moderate volume)

Advantages: Simultaneously stimulates multiple energy systems; less prone to adaptation plateaus; suitable for mid-season when races are imminent.

Disadvantages: The body receives multiple stimuli simultaneously, and each adaptation may not be deep enough; high demands on recovery capacity.

3. Block Periodization

Core Concept: Concentrate training goals into 3–4 week “blocks,” focusing on one or two energy systems at a time to maximize adaptation of that system before moving to the next block.

Typical Block Structure:

  1. Accumulation Block (3–4 weeks): High volume Zone 2 + moderate volume sweet spot, building the aerobic base
  2. Transmutation Block (3–4 weeks): Primarily Zone 4–5 intervals, improving FTP and VO2max
  3. Realization Block (1–2 weeks): High intensity, low volume, pre-race sharpening

Advantages: Concentrated stimuli lead to deeper adaptation of a single energy system; particularly suitable for advanced cyclists with more than 3 years of training age.

Disadvantages: High-intensity capacity may temporarily decline during the accumulation block; requires a higher level of training discipline.

How to Choose the Right Periodization Model for Yourself

  • Training age 0–2 years (Beginner): Linear periodization is most suitable—clear structure, easy to follow
  • Training age 2–4 years (Intermediate): Undulating periodization or modified linear periodization, maintaining multiple capacities simultaneously
  • Training age 4+ years (Advanced): Block periodization yields the best results, helping break through plateaus

Practical Recommendations

  • Taiwanese cyclists often have fixed race goals such as the Wuling KOM (May) and the Taiwan KOM Challenge (October); it is recommended to work backward from the primary target event to design a reverse periodization plan
  • Schedule a deload week every 3–4 weeks, reducing training volume by 40–50% to allow supercompensation to occur
  • Track weekly training load (TSS, Training Stress Score) and fatigue levels; you can use Intervals.icu (free) for monitoring
  • Don’t skip the “boring base phase”—the Zone 2 aerobic foundation determines the effectiveness of all subsequent high-intensity training

Periodization is not a concept reserved only for professional athletes. For amateur cyclists in Taiwan, even simply distinguishing between the “base phase,” “intensification phase,” and “race phase” is far more efficient than riding aimlessly all year round with a “just ride” mentality.
