Imagery Training: Letting the Brain “Swim” the Race in Advance

The Scientific Basis of Imagery Training

Mental imagery/visualization activates the same neural circuits as physically executing a movement by repeatedly simulating it at the psychological level, strengthening procedural memory. Multiple studies show that systematic imagery training can improve competitive performance by 10–20% and significantly reduce pre-race anxiety.

Elements of Effective Imagery Training

  • First-person perspective: “Feel” the swimming movements from your own perspective, rather than watching yourself swim from a third-party viewpoint.

  2. Hear “Take your marks,” assume the ready position, pre-tension the muscles, and lock attention onto the starting signal.
  3. The gun sounds—enter the water in a perfect flight arc, streamline tight, surface after three dolphin kicks.
  4. Swim the first 25 meters with a set stroke rate in rhythm, feeling the solid catch of the palms on the water.
  5. Turn—approach the wall, flip, push off, streamline glide, feeling the explosive power of the push-off travel through the body.
  6. Feel slight fatigue in the second half, but increase stroke rate while maintaining complete push-through.
  7. In the final 10 meters, let go of everything and sprint all-out to the finish.
  8. Touch the wall, look at the timing board, and accept the result.

Building a Personal Pre-Competition Routine

A fixed pre-competition routine helps athletes quickly enter the “Ideal Performance State” before every race:

  • Wake-up time: Set a fixed wake-up time on race day (e.g., 3 hours before the race).
  • Meal timing: Confirm the pre-race meal time that works best for you during training (typically eating 2–2.5 hours before the race).
  • Music playback: Many athletes use specific playlists to regulate pre-race emotions (upbeat music increases activation; soothing music reduces excessive anxiety).
  • Imagery training timing: Perform one full imagery rehearsal after warm-up, 10–15 minutes before the race.

Practical Recommendations

  1. Start practicing mental techniques during regular training: Imagery training and breathing relaxation should not be used only before competitions. Integrate them into weekly routine training so mental and physical skills develop together.
  2. Record post-race mental states: Within 24 hours after a race, record the relationship between pre-race anxiety level (on a 1–10 scale) and race performance to gradually understand your “optimal anxiety zone.”
  3. Seek help from sports psychologists: Physical education departments at Taiwanese universities, National Taiwan Sport University, and the Olympic Committee training centers all offer sports psychology consultation services. High-level athletes should actively utilize them.
  4. Help parents and coaches understand the importance of mental preparation: Taiwan’s competitive culture often overemphasizes physical training. Athletes are advised to proactively communicate their mental preparation needs with their support system.
