Introduction
Tainan, Taiwan’s first Han Chinese city, boasts a history spanning over 400 years. Cycling through this city of temples, old streets, and historic monuments is an experience unlike any other in Taiwan—every turn may reveal a Qing Dynasty building, and every alley holds a story about Taiwan’s pioneering history.
The Anping area—Tainan’s old harbor district—is where this historic city began. The Dutch established Fort Zeelandia here in the 17th century, ushering in Taiwan’s colonial history. Today, Anping has become a multifaceted tourist zone combining historic sites, a seafood market, and modern waterfront parks, complemented by well-developed bicycle paths that offer riders a city route blending culture and nature.

Anping Fort and Historic District
Anping Fort (Fort Zeelandia) is the oldest surviving Western-style architectural ruin in Taiwan. Although what visitors see today is primarily the result of Qing Dynasty renovations, the thick brick walls still exude the weight of 400 years of history. Climbing the fort’s observation deck offers a panoramic view of the Taiwan Strait, giving insight into the strategic vision that led the Dutch to build their city here.
Anping Old Street (around Xiaozhong Street and Anbei Road) is the most vibrant and down-to-earth area of old Tainan. Rice cakes, shrimp rolls, and muzhi popsicles—every food here has a history of over 50 years. It’s recommended to refuel here while savoring Tainan’s unique slow-food culture.
Sicao Mangrove Ecology
The Sicao Wetlands are the core conservation area of Taijiang National Park and one of Taiwan’s most important waterbird habitats. Here, you can spot various species of herons, black-faced spoonbills (during the autumn-winter migration period), ducks, and mudskippers.
Sicao Green Tunnel is Tainan’s most popular ecological experience: take a bamboo raft through a waterway lined with dense mangroves forming a green corridor. The channel is only 1-2 meters wide, with trees on both sides interlacing to create a natural tunnel. Sunlight filters through the branches and leaves, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. A bamboo raft boarding station is located beside the bicycle path—it’s recommended to park your bike and join the experience (approximately NT$150, including a 30-minute guided tour).
Tainan City Cycling Network
The Anping route can be further extended to connect with other prime cycling areas in Tainan:
- Tainan City Historic District (Chihkan Tower, Confucius Temple, Shennong Street): approximately 8km of cultural cycling
- Tainan Metropolitan Park Bicycle Path: approximately 12km in total, extending along the Jishui River
- Qigu Salt Mountain Route: approximately 20km north of Anping, featuring Taiwan’s largest salt mountain and the black-faced spoonbill conservation area
Practical Tips
- Tainan summers are extremely hot; it’s recommended to ride between 7-10 AM or 5-7 PM; the sunset at Anping Fishing Harbor is most beautiful in the evening
- YouBike stations are available at various attractions throughout Tainan, making them convenient for short rides
- The Tainan Old City bicycle path map is available free of charge at the Anping Tourist Service Center
- Several bike-friendly cafés near Anping Fishing Harbor offer bike racks and tools
- If you plan to extend your ride to Qigu, it’s recommended to bring your own bike, as YouBike coverage does not extend to suburban areas
Conclusion
Cycling in Tainan is a journey through time. With every pedal stroke, you venture deeper into Taiwan’s history. Anping’s fort and Sicao’s mangroves are not merely tourist attractions—they are the most authentic living memories of this land called Taiwan. Measuring Tainan at bicycle speed, you’ll gain a more complete urban experience than by car or on foot.
