Misconception 1: Low intensity means too slow to produce training effects
Zone 2 training still provides sufficient physiological stimulus—it just targets a different adaptation (promoting mitochondrial biogenesis rather than lactate system enhancement).

Misconception 2: Technique work is unnecessary during the aerobic base phase
Quite the opposite. The base phase is the best time to correct technique—because intensity is low, there is ample “cognitive space” to feel and adjust stroke mechanics, breathing rhythm, and body position.

Misconception 3: Taiwan’s summer water is warm, so aerobic base training isn’t needed
Water temperature affects heat exchange efficiency, not the demands of the energy systems. During summer training, more attention to hydration is needed, but the design logic of the aerobic base phase remains unchanged.

Practical Recommendations

  • Purchase a swim heart rate watch (such as a Garmin Swim or Apple Watch Ultra) to monitor whether you’re in the correct heart rate zone during the base phase
  • Every two weeks, perform a “400m steady-pace time trial” to observe whether perceived exertion at the same pace is decreasing
  • Introduce high-intensity training only after the base phase ends—the results will be far better than jumping straight into high intensity

Conclusion

The aerobic base phase is often the most boring stage of training, but it is the most important investment in the entire training cycle. Many world-class swimmers spend 6–10 weeks on low-intensity, high-volume training at the start of the season precisely because they know that without a broad aerobic foundation, peak performance cannot be built. Give yourself enough time to lay the groundwork, and subsequent speed training will yield twice the results with half the effort.
