When the balance between training stimulus and recovery is broken, the body cannot undergo normal supercompensation, performance declines instead of improving, and a series of physiological and psychological symptoms appear.

Normal Fatigue vs. Overtraining

  • At the same pace, perceived exertion (RPE) is 2–3 levels higher than usual
  • Workouts that were previously easy suddenly become exceptionally difficult
  • Technique visibly breaks down in the latter part of training, making it impossible to maintain usual movement quality
  • The explosive feel in speed work disappears; no matter how hard you push, speed just won’t increase

Psychological Signals

  • Loss of interest or motivation in swimming (the frequency of “I don’t want to go to the pool today” noticeably increases)
  • Easily irritated during training, with lower tolerance for the training environment (crowds, water temperature)

Preventive Strategies (Incorporate into Your Regular Plan)

  • Schedule a deload week every 3–4 weeks: Reduce training volume by 20–30% to allow the body to supercompensate
  • The 80/20 Principle: Spend 80% of training time at low intensity, and only 20% at moderate to high intensity
  • Monitor morning resting heart rate: Develop the habit of recording it daily as an early warning indicator
