Introduction

“Why do I ride fine for the first 30 km, but completely fall apart in the latter part?” This is one of the most common frustrations among amateur cyclists in Taiwan. The reason is almost always the same: starting out too excited, poor intensity control, and paying the price in the latter part for the impulsiveness of the early part.

Pacing is the core skill of all long-distance endurance sports, and one of the hardest abilities to learn through “feel” alone. Good pacing means: your power output stays as uniform as possible across the entire ride, allowing every bit of energy in your body to be used as efficiently as possible.


The Science of Pacing: Why Uniform Output Is Most Efficient

Sports science research shows that in long-distance time trials, even pacing or a slight negative split (faster in the latter half) yields better finish times and physiological efficiency than a positive split of “fast early, slow late.”

The reason lies in the exponential nature of energy expenditure: when you ride at 110% intensity for 1 minute, you burn far more energy than riding at 100% intensity for 1 minute. Every instance of overspeeding in the early part consumes the energy reserves needed for the latter part at a disproportionate rate.

The Power Meter Is the Best Pacing Tool

For riders with a power meter, pacing training is very intuitive: set a target power (e.g., 75% of FTP), then work to maintain that number throughout the ride. Any deviation can be seen and corrected immediately.

For riders without a power meter, the following alternative metrics can be used:

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) Pacing Method

Rate your riding effort on a scale of 1–10, and train your RPE awareness:

  • Long-distance aerobic (200 km, etc.): Maintain RPE 4–5 (comfortable conversation possible, slightly faster breathing)
  • Half-distance race (100 km): Maintain RPE 5–6
  • Time trial (20–40 km): Maintain RPE 7–8 (very breathless, barely able to speak short sentences)

Heart Rate Pacing Method

Use target heart rate zones as the basis for pacing:

  • Long distance: 70–75% of maximum heart rate
  • Half-distance challenge: 75–82% of maximum heart rate
  • Short time trial: 85–90% of maximum heart rate

Note: Heart rate is affected by temperature and hydration status, and it responds with a delay after climbs. When pacing, you need to “anticipate” rather than “adjust only after seeing the heart rate.”


Five Pacing Training Methods

Training 1: Fixed-Power or Fixed-Heart-Rate Long Ride

Method: Choose a route, set a target power or heart rate, and work to stay within ±5% of the target throughout the ride.

Key point: Deliberately hold back for the first 10 minutes, allowing yourself to warm up and gradually settle into a rhythm.

Taiwan application: The Keelung River Bikeway (Taipei, flat, approximately 50 km round trip) and the Dajia River Bikeway (Taichung) are ideal routes for practicing fixed-power pacing.

Training 2: Finish-Time Prediction Practice

Method: Choose a route you know well. Before setting off, predict your finish time based on feel, with the goal of keeping the error within 5% each time.

Purpose: To train your intuitive sense of speed and energy expenditure. Many seasoned riders can accurately predict finish times on any route—this ability is built entirely through accumulated riding perception over time.

Training 3: Segment Pacing Analysis

Method: After the ride, use Garmin Connect or Strava to check average power or speed for every 5 km or 10 km segment, and calculate the fluctuation range.

Goal: Ideal pacing means the speed difference between segments does not exceed 5%. If the difference between the early and late segments exceeds 10%, your pacing control still needs improvement.

Training 4: Climbing Pacing Practice

Method: On a road with continuous climbs, deliberately start at an intensity that “feels easy,” then every 5 minutes “add just a little bit more,” with the goal of reaching maximum effort only at the summit.

Challenge: The most common mistake among Taiwanese cyclists is charging too hard at the base of the climb, leaving themselves completely out of strength for the final 1–2 km. This drill directly counters that bad habit.

Training 5: Timer-Based Interval Pacing

Method: On an indoor trainer, perform 3×10-minute “power climbing intervals”: maintain 80% of FTP for the first 10 minutes, 85% for the second 10 minutes, and 90% for the third 10 minutes. Feel the transition from “okay” to “hard” to “very hard,” and calibrate the correspondence between RPE and power.


Special Principles for Climbing Pacing

Climbing pacing requires additional consideration of the oxygen-thinning effect at altitude. General recommendations:

  • Early part of a long climb (low altitude): Start at 5–8% below target power
  • Middle part of a long climb: Gradually adjust up to target power
  • Late part of a long climb (high altitude, thin air): Power naturally drops 5–10%; at this point, use RPE to maintain perceived intensity
  • Above 3,000 meters on Wuling: Expect power output to be 10–15% lower than on flat ground; this is a normal physiological response

Practical Advice

Build a personal pacing database: After each ride on a fixed route, record finish time, average power (or heart rate), weather conditions, and how you felt. After accumulating 20–30 entries, you will have a deep understanding of your pacing ability under different conditions.

The pacing trap of group rides: Riding with partners of different speeds can easily ruin your pacing plan. Communicate with your partners in advance that “today I need to ride at a specific intensity,” or set a personal rule: “no matter how fast my partners go, I maintain my own target intensity.”
