Scenario 1: High HRV + Feeling good
→ Execute the plan as scheduled, and you may even slightly increase intensity within the plan’s allowable range
Scenario 2: High HRV + Feeling fatigued
→ HRV sometimes leads subjective feelings; execute the plan but closely monitor how you feel during the session

Road runners need to understand that HRV reflects more than just training fatigue. The following factors also lower HRV:
- Insufficient sleep (greatest impact)
- Alcohol consumption (even small amounts significantly lower HRV that night and the following day)
- Illness or infection (HRV decline is an early signal of immune system activation, often dropping 1–2 days before symptoms appear)
- Psychological stress (work pressure, interpersonal conflict, etc.)
- Travel and jet lag
- Female menstrual cycle (HRV is typically slightly lower before menstruation)
Therefore, HRV should be interpreted in conjunction with journal entries, rather than making decisions based on the number alone.

- Record 5 items daily: HRV value, hours of sleep, subjective fatigue (1–5 scale), previous day’s training load, and any special circumstances (stress/alcohol/illness)
- Do not overreact to a single value: Trends over 3+ consecutive days are more meaningful than a single day’s reading
- Pre-race taper: Expect HRV to rise 3–5 days before race day—this is a signal that peak condition is approaching
- Immune early warning: If HRV suddenly drops significantly while training load is normal, it could be a precursor to infection—immediately increase rest and supplement with Vitamin C/zinc
- Avoid “analysis paralysis”: HRV is a supporting tool; final decisions should still combine subjective feelings and coach recommendations
