For many riders, the limiting factor on climbs isn’t leg strength—it’s breathing. As the gradient steepens and heart rate spikes, breathing becomes rapid and shallow, which actually decreases oxygen uptake efficiency, creating a vicious cycle—the more you gasp, the harder it is to pedal; the harder it is to pedal, the more anxious you get; the more anxious you get, the more you gasp. This article draws on respiratory physiology to introduce breathing rhythm techniques and training methods for climbing, helping Taiwan’s mountain riders establish efficient oxygen uptake patterns.

Respiratory Physiology During Climbing

When climbing, the body requires large amounts of oxygen to fuel muscle work. As intensity increases, breathing patterns undergo the following changes:

Climbing primarily occurs in Z3–Z4, where managing breathing rhythm is crucial. There are two main causes of poor breathing efficiency: shallow chest breathing and hyperventilation.

Abdominal Breathing vs. Chest Breathing

Chest breathing only uses the upper portion of the lungs, moving less air per breath, requiring a higher frequency to maintain oxygen uptake and consuming more respiratory muscle energy.

Abdominal breathing (diaphragmatic breathing) allows the lower lungs to fully expand, taking in more air with each breath, so even at a slightly lower frequency, adequate oxygen uptake can be maintained.

How to tell which breathing pattern you’re using: While riding, place your hand on your abdomen—on inhalation, your abdomen should expand outward; on exhalation, it should naturally contract. If only your chest rises and falls, you’re using chest breathing.

How to practice abdominal breathing:

  1. Practice first while stationary—lying on your back or sitting, feel your abdomen bulge on inhalation and sink on exhalation
  2. While riding, consciously “breathe into your belly”
  3. It will feel unnatural at first, but after 2–3 weeks of persistence, it becomes a habit

Climbing Breathing Rhythm Techniques

Synchronizing Breathing with Pedaling Cadence

Synchronizing breathing with pedaling cadence reduces respiratory muscle energy expenditure and is a technique used by many long-distance riders:

  • Gentle climbs (Z2–Z3): Breathe once every 2 pedal cycles (2:2 rhythm)
  • Moderate climbs (Z3–Z4): Breathe once every 1–2 pedal cycles (1:1 or 1:2 rhythm)
  • Steep climbs (Z4–Z5): Breathe entirely as needed, no forced synchronization

There’s no need to rigidly adhere to these ratios—what matters is establishing a sense of rhythm and avoiding erratic breathing.

Active Exhalation Technique

Most people focus only on inhalation while neglecting exhalation. Fully exhaling allows more waste gas (carbon dioxide) to be expelled, freeing up more space for the next breath. When climbing, try actively drawing your abdomen toward your spine to complete a more thorough exhalation—you’ll notice a marked improvement in lung capacity on the following inhalation.

Nasal Inhale/Mouth Exhale vs. Mouth Inhale/Mouth Exhale

  • Z2–Z3 (gentle to moderate climbs): Nasal inhale and mouth exhale is recommended—the nasal passages filter dust and moderately warm the air
  • Z4 and above (high-intensity climbs): Switch to mouth inhale and mouth exhale to increase airflow, but be mindful of dry or cold air irritating the throat
  • Taiwan’s winter mountains (temperatures below 12°C): Use a neck gaiter or mask to reduce cold air directly stimulating the trachea

Managing Hyperventilation

Anxiety or a sudden increase in intensity during a climb can easily trigger hyperventilation—breathing frequency becomes too fast but each breath’s volume is insufficient, causing blood carbon dioxide levels to drop too low, which paradoxically makes you feel even more breathless, or even dizzy.

Coping methods:

  1. Forcibly slow your breathing rate: Replace faster breathing with deeper breathing
  2. Shift to one or two gears easier, temporarily reducing power output
  3. Focus your attention on exhalation, fully exhaling before inhaling
  4. Hyperventilation typically resolves within 30–60 seconds—don’t panic

Breathing Training Methods

  • Yoga/Pilates breathing exercises: Twice a week, 15 minutes of abdominal breathing practice to improve diaphragm control
  • Threshold-intensity breathing awareness training: During Z4-effort rides, deliberately monitor the depth and rhythm of every breath
  • Respiratory muscle training devices (e.g., POWERbreathe): Inspiratory resistance training to improve respiratory muscle endurance (advanced option)
  • Counting aloud on climbs: Loudly counting pedal strokes while climbing forces you to maintain a steady breathing rhythm

Practical Advice

  • Feeling “breathless but not panicked” on a climb is a normal Z3–Z4 state—no need to slow down because of it
  • If you feel throat tightness or dizziness, slow down first and then adjust your breathing—don’t push through
  • At high altitudes (above 2,500m, such as the upper section of Wuling), the air is thinner and breathing rate naturally increases—this is a normal response
  • Staying well hydrated helps keep the airways moist; drink at least 150–200ml every 20 minutes while climbing
  • In the early stages of training, practice abdominal breathing on gentle climbs first, then apply it to high-intensity climbs once it becomes a habit

Conclusion

Breathing may seem instinctive, but it is a skill that can be trained and optimized. Master abdominal breathing, active exhalation, and pedaling-synchronized rhythm, and your climbing experience will shift from “gasping to the point of collapse” to “steady and rhythmic.” This change doesn’t require raising your FTP—just a few weeks of conscious practice, and the results are often surprisingly significant.
